A little history about the Fiesta...it started out in the 70s as a tie-in to the WAC (when both AZ schools were still in it). At the end of the 86 regular season, Miami and Penn State were #1 and #2. They couldn't play each other in the Cotton/Orange/Rose/Sugar so the Fiesta made perfect sense for NBC (prime time, good weather, big enough stadium). After that, it sorta took over prestige from the Cotton (which was in the Coalition but not the Alliance and BCS).
It was also the first bowl to have a sponsor.

I think Sugar has slight edge at top of the pecking order.
I think you only say that due to the SEC tie in.
The rose bowl game is still #1.
shite I've heard of old people talking about that shite, with no care in the world.

Sugar wasn't even tied in to the SEC winner until the 75 season. I've always hated the Rose but it's clearly #1.

That's because of the BCS and CFP. Had the Sugar Bowl survived as the automatic tie-in for the winner of the SEC, it would have shot up in prestige during this century as the SEC winners started turning the Sugar Bowl in the regular NC game site.

My choice by sponsor names since you'll hear these
as much or more often than the old traditional names.
1- Northwestern Mutual Bowl
2- Allstate Bowl
3- PlayStation Bowl
4- Capital One Bowl
5- Goodyear Bowl
6- Chick-fil-A Bowl

I felt the same way until I went to the Rose Bowl in 2014. Great venue and they go all out. I didn't have a dog in the fight, but it was a great time in a beautiful part of the country. Even if most of them are nuts.

There is no "prestige" in ANY bowl game any more...thanks to the BCS and CFP...
The BCS chopped the legs out of the bowls and the CFP gave them the mercy kill...
Call me old, but not so long ago, there was a time when all of those "prestigious" bowl games were played on a single day. It was an all day, orgy of football, New Year's Day Food to nurse that NYE hangover....family, friends, and neighbors would come over drink, eat, leave come back, etc...it was pretty much the most awesome day of the year.
And after the end of the last game on that glorious day...you might find out who was the National Champion if you could stay awake until 1:00 AM or so...
and then you got to debate whether or not that was correct or not...FOR an entire year...
Don't get me wrong, I like the playoff format, but let's not even pretend that the Rose Bowl is prestigious anymore UNLESS it is a venue for the CFP.

Yeah I agree and part of the reason I assume is because of the history of the NY6 bowls being allocated to certain conferences.

The cotton bowl is usually a shitty game

Traditionally,
the Rose has hosted champions of the B1G and Pac-10/12. Its the only one that had guaranteed matchups of champions for so long.
The Sugar and Orange was the home of the SEC and Big Eight Champions (and later ACC).
The old Cotton hosted the champion of the SWC.
The Fiesta was in the right place at the right time when the BCS was formed. It was a Citrus-level bowl until the BCS era. Usually matched up two teams ranked in the teens.
The Peach took advantage of the new stadium to get into the NY6. The Holiday Bowl probably is the sixth most prestigious bowl historically. Citrus and Sun Bowls have great history as well.
I'd rank them
Rose
Orange/Sugar
Cotton
Fiesta
Peach

Tie-ins would have inevitably become a problem. Take the Rose. Most prestigious because of history? Certainly. Most prestigious because Pac and Big winners are tied to it...? Well, not so much anymore. Once they started tying it to those two conferences and overall football power started shifting to the south and midwest, its decline was inevitable. Sure you'd get the occasional USC and Ohio State or PSU, but it was pretty much doomed to slip. The BCS making it part of the rotation was the only guarantee of a great game.

Varies by year with the CFP doesn't it?

I always thought the Cotton Bowl was right after the Rose, Sugar, and Orange. I can't remember why/how the Fiesta moved up the pecking order? Years ago it was on the same level as the citrus/tangerine.

Right after the top group, you have to include the Sun Bowl. Been around since 1935. ELP goes all out for the players and is known for its great hospitality.
The 1974 game saw a very unusual snow storm the night before the game. The sun during the day warmed the frost/snow on the grass creating a fog effect. State ended up edging NC 26-24 in what was later dubbed the Fog Bowl.
It is easily ranks as one of the best , if not the best of the other bowls.

At the end of the 86 regular season, Miami and Penn State were #1 and #2. They played in the Fiesta since they couldn't play each other in the Cotton/Orange/Rose/Sugar because of the tie-ins at the time. That put the Fiesta on the map (also the first bowl to have a sponsor) and had top 5 FSU and Nebraska the next season.
At the same time, the Cotton started to fade. It was part of the Coalition (92-94) but not the Alliance (the final Southwest champ played in the Sugar). They really needed a dome since it can get pretty damn cold in north TX.
