The point is, how do you even know Lanning can sustain it? He was handed a decent team. He hasn't really had to prove he can maintain that. This is the first season the PAC was even decent competition in several years and he came out with 2 losses and nearly loss to Texas Tech. I would think they would be looking for a coach with a better resume since it is Alabama. Not some flash in the pan Tom Hermann type...

Wish him the best, and of course as an LSU fan glad he's leaving. But hope it's not due to a bad personal situation.
To think his last year coaching 72 years old, some Alabama fans calling for his retirement earlier in the year, made the playoffs, took Michigan to the brink with what is probably one of the "lesser" Alabama teams he's had in a while... yeah, goodbye and stay retired.

Lanning has a few things going for him that should make most objective people think he likely can maintain what he's done.
First, he didn't maintain what Oregon had been doing, he improved it (from a solid 10-4 season). While he'd already been proven as a DC, that shows his "coaching players up" ability exists as a head coach.
Second, he's maintained Oregon's recruiting. Cristobal was a great recruiter too, so that's a positive even at the maintenance level. Recruiting has a very good correlation to long term success in college football.
Third, he's done pretty well using the transfer portal which going forward will likely have an impact on long term coaching success.
Lanning is the young coach who's the most proven at this point. Lanning is 37. For comparison, Deboer is 49 and Kiffin is 48.
Norvell is 42, but he's only had 2 solid seasons at FSU, so it's not like he's more proven.

After seeing what's happened at Texas the past decade and a half, I'm not having any of those flash in the pan dudes at the top of my list if I'm BAMA.
I'd rather have Dabo or Urban Meyer than any of those guys.
You never know with those coaches that only had a couple of years success at a major program...They are boom or bust...Even Sark is still questionable right now. I'm definitely not ready to say Texas is back, lets see if he can keep the success going and keep the team improving another couple of years..Next year will be real telling for him after losing all these starters to the NFL.

Agreed but personally I will never doubt sark again. I thought he was a complete failure after last season and wanted his arse gone and I was wrong. Dead wrong. I'll never doubt that man again.
He's been building this team the right way from the inside out and I should have recognized that's what he's doing. The last decade +3 just beat the frick out of us as fans. Some stayed positive and hat's off to them. I don't know how they did it.

I was worried about Sark, still am a little, because of his records at the programs out West. However, he impressed me by coming in and making it a priority to fix the Oline and Dline. It was really easy to see where Texas problems were, but none of the coaches after Mack seemed to have a solution or make it a priority, until Sark. We had maybe 5 Oline in the 13 years before Sark that could get playing time elsewhere, the rest just sucked, transferred out, got injured or whatever. It was a big glaring problem. So, I will give him those praises and the Conference Championship in just 3 years..
