Competitive advantage from exceptional recruiting. #1 recruting class every single year = 5 star 3 deep at most positions

He wont be able to replicate his success in the NFL because the playing field is more level.

One word...Recruiting. He gets the best players every year. To his credit, he gets max effort every game out of his stacked roster. Put him on an even playing field and he is a good coach. Let him go out and get the best players every year and he is the best ever.

The one thing I would add that separates him is his understanding of psychology. He knows what motivates his players better than any coach since Bryant. Ex. The use of Dr. Elko during the 2012 NC. Bryan Kelly said he didn't belive in that type psychology. We easily had the mental edge in the NC game, imo.

Not just during the game but also from recruiting certain type players to controlling them all the way through their time in Tuscaloosa. His unique understanding of psychology is also why his assistants can't duplicate his success elsewhere. You can't fully duplicate the process unless you understand how to apply the mental edge.

He gets world class talent by any means necessary

He is extremely organized and makes the most out of every minute of every hour of every day.

He is a leader and a master motivator.

Pretty tough to beat that

In addition to all that... he now has the snowball effect. Great players find him and seek out his program, same as up and coming assistant coaches. He's gotta be good enough to pull the trigger and manage that talent, but the reputation he's built has to be paying dividends as far as maintaining greatness.

It also helps to be at the best program in college football history.

But his attention to detail, his knowledge of exposing his opponent's weaknesses are unmatched.

He didn't do it at Michigan State. He was just an average coach there.

See, this is where you demonstrate ignorance. Not sure if intentionally, to make your point, or unintentionally, but there it is.

Saban took over a team that had not had a winning record on the field in 5 years, and almost immediately after taking over the team was hit with sanctions from the previous coach's tenure.

quote:

Penalty Summary: Public reprimand; reduction in initial awards from 25 to 23 during 1996-97 and from 25 to 18 for 1997-98; reduction of total awards from 85 to 79 during 1996-97; reduction of eight official visits from 56 to 48 during 1995-96; reduction by one coach allowed to recruit off campus during December 1995 and 1996 and during January 1996 and 1997; disassociation of three athletics representatives; assistant coach prohibited from recruiting off campus during December 1995 and from 5/1/96 - 4/30/97; forfeiture of five football wins from 1994 season; annual reports.

So, he was coaching with an arm tied behind his back, coaching a program in a state that was always going to be Michigan-first, and still managed to pull them up a top 10 ranking before departing to LSU, where he cleaned up that mess and had them on top. Then he did the same at Alabama.

So what you are saying is that it is Bama that made Nick great? Is that what you are saying?

Hate to say the word but ......it's the Process. He learned from Bill B and look what that man does year in and year out. Lets free agents walk , grabs guys off the trash heap , draft picks always pan out (it seems) and he consistently wins in a league built to have parody. Saban uses these philosophies and tactics to do the same. He was asked this exact question on Gameday Saturday and this was pretty much his answer word for word. Although he did mention two other coaches who have helped him create this "process" along the way before he put it all together and became one the greatest coaches to ever walk a college football sideline.

I don't think he gets enough credit for just being a really fricking smart guy. He's always thinking 3 moves ahead, and does so with an obsessive fervor.
Nobody is as tirelessly dedicated to his job. This all leads to great recruiting of players and coaches.
Then on top of it all, he has a great presence and ability to motivate and coach.
He's a once in a lifetime coaching legend like Bear Bryant

He's none of the above. He failed miserably in a league that had parity.

Left the NFL to basically retire in college football. Didn't want to do the work so he asked Bama to hire him a monstrous staff like he had in the NFL and Bama obliged.

That massive group of coaches and 21 former coaches in the support staff are double to triple that of any other coach. They help prepare the team and recruit nationally through their system of connections.

Once another large school is willing to employ a staff like this, versus trying to get the NCAA to reduce this competitive advantage, they will likely overtake Bama.

This has been a good thread on Saban. The guy was born to succeed/get ahead in life. Would probably have made millions in any business.

Great recruiter and CEO of a program

He aint no genius. Hes not a guy that's going to beat you with his guys and take your guys and beat his guys too.

He gets the number one recruiting class every year and dominates. He was no big deal at Mich st or the pros

Hes great at big time programs like LSU and Alabama.
