The LB from Vanderbilt (Marve?) is gonna be one of the best in the SEC he is just under the radar because he goes to Vandy.
Also Hightower could be a beast if he comes back healthy.

He projected as a 2nd or 3rd rounder this year. His measurables are legit. I've seen him at a few restaurants around town and he's as wide as a freaking house and I'm 6'1 and had to look up to him.

I think Chavis did a good job convincing him to stay. I won't forget his epic run in the middle of the season where in 4 games he had 47 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 1 PD, 1 sack, 1 QBH and 1 INT (UF/Barn/Tulane/Bama).

I would definitely have him as a ALL SEC LB heading into next year then.. He already had a solid year last year..

Jelani Jenkins and John Bostic at Florida are going to be really good, although neither might get past Hicks or Jones for starting time this year.
Herman Lathers and Lamarcus Thompson could both emerge at Tennessee.
Marcus Dowtin at UGA.
You could go on and on...
That's the thing about the SEC. Just about every team in the league has good LB's. Even Kentucky had Micah Johnson for a few years.
It doesn't look like there is one super stud LB in the SEC next year though. Not right now anyways.

What was his projection in the draft?
sheppard:
he is rated the 3rd best ILB for the 2011 draft. he is currently behind Greg Jones from Michigan State and Quan Sturdivant from UNC

he will be great I think one day and the experience he got this yr helped but the thread is about the NEXT great he is still a yr away if he follows in Hightowers shoes. That remains to be seen.

Say what you want about Chavis, but the dude can really coach LB's. Sheppard wasn't nearly as good a player before this past year when Chavis showed up. He really surprised me because I didn't think he was that good. He stepped up as a leader off the field, also. For whatever reason LSU doesn't get a lot of stud LB recruits, but Chavis really makes them the best they can be.

His players really like him and give 100% for him, but damn it can be frustrating sometimes. He doesn't give up a lot of points, but sometimes he makes for a slow death. Teams march up and down the field, get three points, keep our O on the bench, and eventually they give up something and we lose.

quote:This is absolutely true and one area on the LSU team where you can actually see that players are benefiting from coaching. Chavis has always done well with LB's, his defenses are built around them. He even made Cutrera look half-way decent.

quote:It's been since Arnsparger that LSU had quality coaching focused around developing LB's. Archer, Hallman, Saban were all DB oriented coaches and Dinardo was an OL coach just like Sling Blade. Pellini was overated and Muschamp isn't a LB oriented guy. If LSU could keep getting the OL/DL guys that they have historicaly always had, along with the skill guys at WR/DB AND were able to develop quality LB's they would be bad arse.

I agree with your post, but Muschamp was a LB guy as he was our LB coach. He just happened to be a Saban guy also, and Saban was/is a DB guy.

quote:I guess so then, maybe they just didn't recruit the LB's as well as they did DL/DB during the Muschamp/Saban era - which is weird. There is no doubt LA/TX recruiting base for LSU is full of good LB's, but that is one area of talent that Alabama has historicaly had a plethora of dominant talent to pick from.

The LSU LB's in the late 80's were great. Eric Hill, Ron Sancho, Toby Caston, Michael Brooks. Even the shitty ones like Nicky Hazard were able to get it done.

Josh Bynes will at least make ALL SEC.
I think Stevens might make it before Bynes. Bynes is great up the middle, but his speed is not top notch. Stevens is that guy who's quietly all over the place making stops.
