LSU has a really young team this season so they may be well set up to have a yer with a bunch of freshman redshirts if needed.

This is hilarious since the school system in Baton Rouge just lowered the GPA requirements for high school athletes to a 1.5.

I love this rule. Need to not drop the requirements to get into college anyway.

Or, just call them pros and pay them and forget classes.

If there is cheating, it seems like they'd be bribing teachers to falsify grades. It's pretty cut and dried...

NCAA Rules

I love their little graphic - "2.3 or take a knee"

Personally, I like it too. Their education has value, and too many athletes tend to ignore that.

Good, I'm staring to come around to the thinking we need higher academic standards within academics.

Wish my hometown would've made athlete's athletic road tougher. They didn't us all any favors by putting football ahead of academics. Many high school towns look the other way, all because someone can play ball.

I'm glad Saban seems to be making academics important

I wonder if, in some states, more athletes will be classified as SPED. A variety of accommodations available, including modified grading scales and extra grade opportunities.

Some schools already cheat to get a stud recruit into college.

So, now high school teachers and principles will be getting bribe money along with college professors?

That should help stimulate the economy.

I think it probably affects basketball more than football, in that it'll slow down a lot of players who have been reclassifying. Especially this part:

quote:

It is required that 10 out of 16 courses be taken prior to the start of senior year. This means athletes can’t retake these courses to enhance a GPA over time or put off the courses until the end of a high school career.

But this is something high schools with potential college athletes have been aware of for some time. In most places you have to have a 2.0 just to qualify to play in HS.

That's as it should be, IMO. But that part of the rule, and the fact that the 2.3 is required in core classes (not easier electives) may cause some problems for kids.

And I don't know what it would do for SPED kids - that wasn't addressed in anything I read.

I'd imagine SPED kids will probably still get accommodations/exceptions.

I can't speak for other states, but I know there's an emphasis here on what you pass/don't pass by core content. It shouldn't be too hard for athletes from here to meet it.

But as far as I'm concerned, if you can't pull just over a 2.0 in basic core classes then you shouldn't be qualifying for college anyway.

In the state of Tennessee, there is no GPA requirement. All you have to do is have earned five credits the previous year (for schools requiring 24 for graduation). You can technically be eligible with a 0.71 GPA.

In addition, in Tennessee, if you are eligible on the first day of school, you cannot lose your eligibility during the year. You can make 5 Ds and 2 Fs the previous year and fail everything the current year and not lose your eligibility during the current year.

Don't know if it is still true in Florida, but several years ago an athlete had to maintain his eligibility requirements every time report cards came out.

Couldn't agree more.
