NCAA isn't messing around this time. Watch out Kansas, Arizona and LSU (and Auburn)

The penalties levied against Oklahoma State on Friday were fairly severe: A postseason ban for 2020-21, three years of probation, loss of a scholarship for three years and other various recruiting restrictions. Given the details of the case, which involved former assistant Lamont Evans taking between $18,150 and $22,000 in bribes to steer athletes toward financial advisers, a postseason ban was surprising.
But the more interesting discussion is what that punishment portends for others who are waiting for their number to be called in the NCAA’s infractions process. We’re talking about schools like Southern Cal and Auburn, where the situation with former assistant Chuck Person looks similar, and obviously schools like Louisville,LSU, Arizona and Kansas where the underlying infractions are likely far more expansive than what Oklahoma State is dealing with.

College basketball is exactly as slimy as lots of us thought it was, and the only way to even start fixing it is by making some of the penalties so severe that coaches reassess the risk-reward equation that has long suggested that cheating pays.
Until now, the NCAA has been perceived as too weak and ineffective to really police any of this stuff, but nobody really counted on the FBI being able to tap phones and use undercover agents to lure basketball coaches and shoe company executives into a scheme. While the FBI’s return on investment may have been small, their work gave the NCAA a road map to wield as a hammer. And hammer they will.

Oklahoma State was only accused of one Level 1 violation, yet that didn’t save their 2020-21 season Friday. Kansas, by contrast, has been accused of three Level 1 violations in men’s basketball and a head coach responsibility charge against Self. LSU’s inevitable Notice of Allegations, which could include some incriminating wiretaps of head coach Will Wade, hasn’t arrived. Auburn has refused to say one way or the other whether theirs is in hand. Arizona is still bracing for impact.
Based on the precedent set Friday, they should all be very concerned.

Gonna be hard to do when they're banned from the postseason.

Are they going to a convention there?

If there's anything I've learned about NCAA investigations, it's that universities should make their jobs ridiculously hard to get information.

It’s cute that you still think that’s happening. Your pencil neck coach will be there for 4 years and then be fired just like all those other names that have been there since Gottfried retired

It’s basketball, so what?
LSU is a football and baseball school and we’ve been champions in both multiple times. Many of us don’t really give two shits about basketball or if the ncaa comes knocking or not.
If LSU basketball gets slammed, take some of those 6’7” players and move them to tight end or receiver. Maybe we can get a great defensive end out of it.

LSU will get a postseason ban and Will Wade will be in handcuffs.

Kinda bullshite for the NCAA to hammer a program because an assistant coach tried to steer guys to a certain agent, not paying money to entice recruits to come, but whatever. Petty criminals get executed while the blue bloods get away with murder.

Nothing happening to Auburn or LSU

Real question - why do we pay taxes when the FBI is investigating basketball scandals?

For what crime?

Because it can lead to the entire athletic dept being put on probation and your other programs will be under scrutiny.
Any major sport that gets nailed is not a good thing

Chuck took money to make sure kids left.
Didn't bama have an assistant take money too?
ETA just realized that was a Dan wolken piece. Guy sucks

I want someone to make a GIF of Bruce Pearl and Will Wade slapping a high five and then turning to the camera and smiling like “deal with it”.
It would be great. I have said it before and I will say it again:
1. I love how Auburn had handled this matter. I love how Pearl has handled this matter. We just keep playing and winning.
2. I love how Wade has handled this matter. He just keeps coaching and smiling and winning.
The only people that disappointed me is the LSU Administration when they suspended him before the tourney. That was a very good team that deserved a chance to play with the seeding they earned. LSU will get no “brownie points” for sitting Wade. None.
Screw the NCAA.
Screw their favoritism to blue bloods.
Screw their selective punishments.
Keep on keeping on Coach Wade. Most reasonable fans live your style.

I'm so glad our compliance department does not play. It hurts us short term, but it won't long term.
