I don't remember rivals having rankings back then. I think they just did recruiting news and some profiles.
But I don't know exactly what year they started.
Saban obviously got good talent and developed it at LSU, I'm just saying it wasn't thought of like it is now.
Look at the LSU media guides from those years, specifically his 2001 class consisting of Marcus Spears, Michael Clayton, Corey Webster, Joseph Addai, Andrew Whitworth, Ben Wilkerson, Travis Daniels, etc

Deboer may or may not pan out to be a great coach... Following a coaching legend was always going to be virtually impossible. The only thing that is certain though is this... Alabama made the best hire to give the program the best opportunity to be successful post Saban

Yeah, there is no doubt he got talent and developed it. You don't win a NC if you can't do that.
There were still big names in recruiting and all that.
It's just that people weren't talking about things in terms of "#1 recruiting classes" and all that stuff. It's more like you just gotta get the guys who fit what you do and then develop them. No free agents, you got players as freshmen and you developed them.

Deboer has more blue chippers than anyone in the country. Probably more blue chippers than one P4 conference combined. Any loss is an indictment on the staff.
By all means see how he did at UW against more talented teams

Only hire I see that would have been better is Kirby, as he could easily continue what Saban has built and wouldn't miss a beat. However, that's obviously out of the question.

You only get to criticize the hire if you can make a case for someone who is better and was attainable, IMO.
Like you, I believe DeBoer was the best option available.

Deboer is perfect for the Updykes. That is my one compliment for the day.
