Not counting people like Woody Hayes and Jim Tressel who were fired for reasons unrelated to on field play, who are the most successful coaches to have been fired? Is Miles the most successful ever?

Depends on what you consider fired.

Plenty of coaches "retire" but were really fired.

If that's the case, I'd say Bear Bryant.

most coaches are smarter than Les miles and they retire so they aren't forced to be fired.

FSU basically fired Bobby Bowden

Well he wasn't really a successful coach at the time he was fired. Not was he going to be a good coach again.

Who fired Bear? Certainly not UK, aTm, or Bama. Did he get fired when he was young?

Bryant was literally his own boss. No way was he going out on anything but his own terms. He was practically on his deathbed his final season.

I agree

hey retire so they aren't forced to be fired.
That is not a good indication of first quote. Les would have to be dumber than Forrest Gump to quit with $13m buyout on the table.

He was very successful for Auburn.

But alas, he left Alabama and was not fired.

yes and make no mistake about it, he also ran the whole conference. He was a legend and absolutely was not fired and left Bama on his own terms. I know for a fact UK offered him more money to stay, but he told them he didn't want to play second fiddle to the basketball coach. He turned a horrible aTm program around and was absolutely not fired there. This much I know. I don't really know where and if he was an assistant coach, and if he was ever fired. Maybe, but I never heard of it.
