You keep bringing up attendance, not the popularity of a team. Obviously the tens of thousands of Grizzly fans in Mid and East TN won't make the drive to Memphis. Same with the Braves and Cardinals not driving to Atlanta and St. Louis. That doesn't have shite to do with the sheer number of fans and popularity for those teams through out the state.

Vanderbilt has had over 40,000 fans since the 1970s, lol sure? Now, go pull up the Average number of away tickets sold. Just off the top of my head when UT, UF, or UA go up to Dudley the stadium has literally thousands and thousands of fans filling up section after section with Orange, Blue, and Red. Don't play it off like Vanderbilt goes out there and the home crowd puts up those numbers of attendance.

Attendance doesn't equal which teams are more popular in the state when the other venues aren't in said state. I would put my house on it that just the number of Braves fans in TN could still go to Atlanta and sell out Turner field

But if they don't attend, who cares? What does that matter? The Braves never sell out Turner Field, even in the playoffs. For the record, I'm a Braves fan. I'm just talking total of tickets, and Vandy in all sports beats the Braves in TN tickets. Y'all kill us, I'm not disputing that. However we sell more tickets than the Braves do to people from TN in total of football + basketball+ baseball. Middle Tn couldn't give a shite and west is cardinals..that is just the way it is.

I equated the most popular sports team in the state and broke it down like this.

If you were to walk around any of the 3 parts of TN which teams hats, apparel, and decals would you see the most of?

At the very least, you would see more Cardinals, Braves, Grizzlies, Vols, and Titans apparel over Vanderbilt any day of the week.

New Jersey is divided into two parts:

North Jersey - Mets, Yankees, Devils, Giants, Jets
Rangers, Knicks, Nets

South Jersey - Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, 76ers

I won't deny that. In fact, I'd say you would also see more Memphis and probably more MTSU gear. However, Vandy puts 35-40k in the stadium every other week plus 14k in Memorial up to twice a week. I'm not saying we have a huge fanbase, I'm just saying that the numbers we turn out are bigger than you are giving us credit for.

But I thought the Big 10 was capturing all of the television market in the northeast when Rutgers joins.

All I can tell you is that I had TN season ticket holder's seats in '05, and that was the greatest game of my life. I didn't register as a VU fan and it didn't matter. That said, good luck to you in the up-coming season.

It would be interesting to see this breakdown. Not sure what the correct answer is.

1.The Titans are an expansion team in a state that was already full of fans from other NFL teams prior to them arriving. Tennessee residents didn't drop their affiliations to the teams they grew up with because the Titans came in in the late 90s. Outside of Nashville the Titans influence is very hit or miss with a big number of Nashville residents who still don't root for the Titants.

I agree completely with this.
quote:

2. The Vols have the biggest fan base in the state and have for a 100 years. From the biggest cities to the smallest podunk towns from Johnson City to Memphis there are literally millions of Vols.

The Vols are and always will be the favorite football team in state and have a huge following, but it is not the same as it was in the late 90's. In west TN, you have a melting pot of fans who pull for any number of SEC teams.

3. Tigers Basketball? Probably ahead of Vandy and behind the MLB teams & the Grizz

This is definitely wrong. Memphis consistently ranks near the top for attendance rankings year in, year out. I would say outside of the Vols, this is easily the second most popular sport in the state. They rank ahead of the Grizz in attendance, although with their recent success, they will increase attendance.

So I would say in order of popularity you have:

1. Vols
2. Memphis Tigers bball
3. Titans
4. Grizz
5. Vandy

In Georgia, is it the Braves, Falcons, or Dawgs (the only 3 in contention IMO)?

The Braves have a larger number of fans due to no competition in MLB but the UGA fan base is much more passionate. If you asked every resident of the state of Georgia to identify with one sports team I would be shocked if Georgia football wasn't the most popular.

Can't find the link but the poll on ESPN a couple of days ago asked if you were more ready for the NFL or college football and it was around 60% NFL for the state of Louisiana.

The Cardinals aren't even the most popular pro baseball team in the State.

I can't speak for the rest of Georgia, but anyone living in atlanta knows the falcons are the most popular team here.

First of all what do you mean by the most popular? I am a huge Falcons fan but have an undergrad and Masters from the University of Georgia so obviously they are my #1. Am I also considered a falcons fan, or are the two mutually exclusive?

I live in Gwinnett County and based on car tags and clothing choices it really isn't even close (UGA outnumbers falcons). I know this isn't a perfect indicator but it is a start. Even if the falcons are the most popular in Atlanta, I grew up in South/Central Georgia and UGA fans outnumber Falcons fans at least 10-1.
