Well that settles it. LSU = Iconic

Before even reading the thread, I assume this is gonna trigger folks, in particular the pachyderms.

ETA: yup, I was right

Surprised auburn is under massive brands. You know, since only people who went to school there are fans and all.

Gator head is absolutely iconic.

The Georgia G isn’t even the most well known G in football. That would go to the Packers.

If they were talking about logos, you might have a point, but they aren't.

the Grove would give them a big brand label if nothing besides they are elite for game day.

Yawn. Anyone outside of a Reb fan that has actually experienced the Grove knows it ain’t much.

This is awesome.

Some dude who works at some online sports place has an opinion and put together a list online.

This information is absolutely factual.

No debate needed.

I think the list is pretty accurate. I would say "brand" is both public awareness, and marketing sales.

Those who argue about LSU, consider they went on a tear the last 2+ decades. LSU was "that team" for the 2000-09 decade, and still with some massive publicity in the years since.
And for recognition factor, I think it doesn't hurt that LSU has just 1 primary look- white jerseys, gold (sunflower yellow) helmets and pants. Oregon's multiple looks sell individual merchandise, but doesn't help establish the brand.

A couple observations- Miami, Penn State and Nebraska are mostly due to historic presence. They'd have been iconic 2 decades ago, this is the residual.

Odd to see Stanford way down in the Smaller Brands group, and to a lesser extent Kansas State. I would have put both brands above, say, Cal, Mizzou, and Ole Miss. And to see Mizzou is "Big" is surprising.

Rutgers being any tier other than "Tiny" is simply due to the East Coast.

Seems like the best way to explain this list- the tiers are fanbase size, + national sidewalk fans, + awareness/hatred/excitement as a potential opponent. Iconic and massive brands are games you get excited to see on the schedule, and make plans to see. Those are nationally televised and discussed if you match 2 of them up.
Big and Medium are still respectable, but aren't season highlights.
Smaller and Tiny brands are essentially filler.

In looking, I see Oregon State and Washington State aren't even listed; I guess that's why they got left behind.

Looks about right. The fact that som many rubes are butthurt about LSU in the top tier is proof that it’s accurate.

Maybe. But I like the fact that we are New Money and have three championship since 2000. That puts us in the iconic category.

GT doesn’t rank at all - unless you are 90 years old and can still remember a few good years in the dark ages.

The gator head has the potential to be iconic. It’s not really straight on or a profile though which hurts it and the orange leash around the neck takes away as well. Something like old Izod logo would be better.

I'd probably go with USC and Florida for that decade, but LSU would probably be third, right before the Alabama mega-dynasty began.
