MSU should be nervous, MSU is a very niche program and Mullen was the perfect fit for that niche. Just like Mullen may not succeed away from State, State may have trouble without Mullen.
Given their location, recruiting and who else is in their division there might not be a tougher Power-5 job in terms of competing for division/conference titles.
You say this, but we've only had one bad hire since I have been alive.

Maybe the likes of Northwestern or Rutgers or BC, but they don't have the totality of programs to compete with annually in their own division that MSU does.
Those places don't have anywhere near the in state and surrounding talent that we do, and Mississippi kids are pretty damn loyal generally speaking. Then there is the excess 3 and 4* talent we pick up from Alabama and Louisiana.
People underestimate just how much talent is in the South. A middle of the road SEC school has a leg up on all but the biggest programs anywhere else in the country. MS only has like 2 million people and we have more current NFL players than Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, etc...

I wonder what these contracts are going to look like once the ESPN money starts drying up.

Its tough because of the power of the West (Auburn, Alabama and LSU), and it certainly is closer to the bottom than the top jobs except for ability to pay and facilities.
Mullen was a top 15 paid coach - we can pay $6 MM+ if needed. The facility turnaround is amazing, and is the real reason Florida hired Stricklin.
The factors that are important in a job are:
Location
Recruiting Base
Historic Performance
Facilities
Ability to Pay
Location is a big negative for MSU, but its not the worst. Ames, Pullman, Manhattan, Blacksburg are all bigger shitholes and have produced winning football teams.
Historic Performance is a perceived negative, but I don't think what happened in the 50s-80s matters one bit. Since 1991, State has gone to 16 bowls in 26 seasons- that's top 25 nationally. This is despite having 8 of 9 years in the 2000s where they finished last place. Plus, they are a top 15 team in the CFP era.
Recruiting Base is good but sharing a small but talented state with another SEC team makes it a little tougher.
Facilities are really good. There are only a handful of schools nationally that can compete facility wise, but 7-8 of them are in the SEC. MSU has nicer facilities than many programs that are considered blue bloods.
Ability to Pay . With the SEC Network Welfare check we get, we're able to compete with most teams on pay.
Its far from the worst job in the country.

seems like A&M would be best to keep their mouth's shut. Why can't you guys get it together with all your fancy facilities and 100k seating capacity.

Gotta lay that foundation first.
It’s not an overnight deal.
Congrats on your new coach; your fanbase seems energized by the hire!

State is the Warren Buffet of the 70s. Give us another 30 years and we will be a behemoth. Steady and disciplined and finding value where others overlook.

And Ole Miss is paying Matt Luke north of $3 MM.
This i just dont get at all. Nobody wanted to come there, sanctions looming, you're going to suck for a while...pay this guy over $3MM for 4 years? Really?
And the $150k per power 5 win, come on now

This could be said about every team that isn't a complete dumpster fire when a change is made.

This same thing was said of Bert. Hope it works out better for y'all.

I laugh when other schools make fun of Mississippi State. They have been doing more with less better than anybody in the country. In fact, they did more with less for so long that they have made themselves a contender with facilities, stadium, fan base etc.
I especially laugh when I hear a Texas A&M or Tennessee fans make fun of them.

That's about half of what everyone else in our division(now sans MSU) has paid their head coaches. How is that laughable?

I worked for Jackie Sherrill at state in the 90’s and he won consistently with no facilities and only started to loose games when all his great assistants left for more money. Jackie started the upgrades and muffin took it to another level. Not saying we are on the level of bama or an elite facility but we are damn good and no longer the bottom of the pit. Love the direction of the program !

I think Luke was a good hire for the Rebels.

Y'all hired a coordinator. He's just as likely to to fail as succeed. Good luck.

Apples to oranges. You had to pay Luke a lot to give him incentive to stay, and a large buyout probably wasn't an option considering the circumstances since it likely would have been a 2 way deal.
This way he has the incentive to stay if he works out and if not it doesn't break you to fire him. While with State we are paying less but probably have a buyout clause for full value of the contract if he leaves with little to nothing owed if he's fired.
You guys did what was best for your situation, not sure why people throw shade at it.

Nah, we hired the best coordinator in the country who has been VERY successful as a HC.
