I don't think people are willfully ignorant of it, they just justify it when its their own people.
Much like how Democrats hate Trump so much that they'll go to the polls in November and vote for an establishment politician who's really done nothing in his decades in office, has made multiple racist statements (some of which, if we're being objective, put any of Trump's "racist" statements to shame), and clearly is having some age related mental competency issues.
