The University of Missouri Is Forcing Its Students To Download A Location Tracking App To Prevent Them From Skipping Class

quote:

The University of Missouri is expanding its Big Brother-like phone-tracking program Tuesday: Now, all new students on campus will be “required” to use an app that surveils their movements, the Kansas City Star reports.

quote:

Even students without phones, he says, are expected to participate.

Curious how that works...

You'd think that some of the kangaroo courts that have resulted from Title IX would have already qualified.

I’m a professor.

I don’t take attendance.

I have hard data showing that there’s a direct correlation between my students who attend class and those who don’t—to say nothing of the fact that part of their grade is comprised of thinking critically, taking a stance, citing research, and arguing their opinions with me throughout the semester.

I tell my students each semester: You’re adults.
If you decide that coming to class isn’t your jam—despite paying serious $ jack to do so—that’s your call.
I couldn’t give less of a lick.

I like Mizzou a great deal.
But the day my academic freedom as a professor is limited that severely by my institution is the day I bounce.

The last twenty years society has take a 5 year step back in its expectations. College kids are now treated like high schoolers. High schoolers like middle schoolers. Middle schoolers like children. Children like Arkansas graduates.

Friend of mine's kid graduated from there last year and said they are still reeling from the fallout of Triggered lady and lack of enrollment.

It’s academic push down.

There are many students who are enrolled in institutions of higher education who shouldn’t be—all in the name of, ”everyone should go to college.”

I’m not going to hijack this thread by opining about why that couldn’t be more incorrect.
A vocational career is as important—if not more so—as a college degree.

Universities used to be about teaching people how to think, solve problems, philosophize, etc.
Now they’re largely about job preparation.
That’s not what higher ed is about.

Education—from PreK to post-secondary has lost its collective way.

This may shock people, but Barstool Sports doesn't exactly present the most balanced article. The KC Star is the outlet that "broke" the story, and says that there are dozens of other institutions that do the same thing, including UNC and Duke. There's no mandatory penalty for not attending class, and the app (according to everyone) doesn't track you so much as log when you enter an area covered by one of their beacons (which are put in each classroom). It's a way to manage attendance other than putting out a sign-in sheet. For the professors, they can opt in or out, and even if they opt in, it's to give them data about who is showing up to class. If they choose to use that to grade based on attendance in any way, that's completely up to them.

I get it's potentially a slippery slope, but really doesn't seem like a big deal.
