But I'm a little confused. Mullen built MSU into a mid-range SEC team who was scaling upwards slowly. Why did MSU not go after an established coach? Nothing against Moorhead, who, by all accounts, is a great OC and may do very well, but he doesn't have nearly the resume of the coach he just replaced when that coach was an OC (Mullen was coming off of his second NC as OC when State hired him)

Why all the buzz?

State is not a destination school. 9 years from a solid coach is a gift. Did Mullen set a base for State to become a 1st tier school? We will see shortly

Moorhead is actually a much better candidate than Mullen was, he has worked with lots of folks and has a bit of HC experiance. Mullen spent his entire career under Meyer and it was questionable if he could survive on his own.

That being said there is no way to tell how it will turn out

I underlined it for you. Until State or UM wins the SEC we will not be a prime job. Let's be real here; if any coach for either of us raised the program up to national prominence they would get a statue while they are still coaching, and a retirement suite.

Seriously though. We name stadiums after fleeting national success.

You one of those Msu fans we see time to time. Did you hear what our AD said about Moorhead? He said during the interview after things were getting locked up that Moorhead told him "I'm not worried about my salary (obviously because he was offered a decent one) but I want to hire the very best assistant coaches out there in order to put together a winner." He told Moorhead the money is there and go get who you need.

That "decent" salary is second to last in the SEC. If he really didn't ask for more, but MoJo asked for more money for his assistants than I have to concede you may have hired a good head coach.

Let's get to the root of this post.

You overpaid for Matt Luke by $3 million.

I think that salary has big bonuses plus raises each year.

I think Moorhead is a good coach but I guess I just thought MSU would shoot for a bigger, more established name. Tennessee may be embarrassing right now but they went all in

Raises are 100k/year. Bonuses are lofty at best. Lukes Phat Contract has the same bonuses. Win a natty, get a million. Safe bet

We buy our coaches by the pound, and I think we got a good deal. BTW, how is your search going?

why retread a HC that couldn't get it done against Saban. I think i prefer one of the highest regarded OCs in the country. He is undefeated against bama

There is a reason nobody hires sitting P5 coaches. It isn't a smart move, ton of money and still have the inherent risk of hiring someone who hasn't won at your school before.

UF was in somewhat of a unique situation in that Mullen had worked with Stricklin, so there was a little less risk.

That’s exactly what happened. He even mentioned it in his press conference.
