Mini-Camp question: Hutson

There are players on SEC rosters who were not drafted, participated in NFL mini-camps. Hutson from Texas as an example. Are they now unable to play in the SEC?

If they signed a contract they’re ineligible in the league. So if said player signed and UDFA deal, then yes he’s ineligible.

He also declared for the draft which makes him ineligible under these conference rules.

Mini-camp pays players. Guess all those kids will be playing for ACC or Big12 schools.

He didn’t get drafted or sign as an UDFA He’s a decent player but he’s not anything to get all worked up either way.
If he plays, he plays.. if not, oh well. He’s not even likely to start or play many snaps unless there are injuries.

The interesting part to me is it disqualifies anyone who "declared for the draft and didn't appropriately withdraw."
Does someone have to actually declare for the draft, if they're out of eligibility? If a player is out of eligibility, goes undrafted, and doesn't sign, are they eligible?

Big 12 passed the same rule 30 minutes ago and ACC isn't expected to be far behind

It’s not about not being drafted. For instance with basketball and the draft. A player can declare, go through the NBA combine, but then withdraw his name from the draft at a certain date that keeps him eligible. If a player doesn’t withdraw by that date, goes through the draft and doesn’t get drafted, he’s SOL.

So the draft declaration bit would only apply to underclassmen? I guess that makes sense.

Yea. I think for the NBA this year the NCAA deadline was around the end of May for them to retain eligibility. And it’s a good rule IMO. Let’s the kids go through the combine and get feedback. Billy Richmond for us did it this past year.
Now for the NFL, the combine is after the declare date. I think the declare date was mid January this year, and the combine much later.
