What’s he complaining about? NIL for basketball 5 stars? The mid majors are talent rich with no NIL funds. He’s at a P4, that isn’t a basketball school. What does he expect. Playing the NIL victim?

His best teams were made up of 5-7 23 year olds on the roster he poached from other teams. He isn’t clean in the hired mercenary game.

If his current record of 4-8 was just reversed he wouldn't be bowing out. He had shot down any notion of retiring in recent history. His team is terrible.

Can't imagine coaching with this shite NIL and portal garbage.

So, coaches can leave for money, including the coach in question, but the players can't.

The universities can profit from the players' NIL, but the players can't profit from their own NIL.

Why do you hate America?

I really don’t get why people are acting like I’m wrong.

He’s literally quitting just before conference play and his stated reason is because players quit after a final four season.

That is literally what he said.

Was that before half his team quit?

It’s also relevant he’s 75 years old. He very likely doesn’t have it in him at his age to deal with the recruiting complexities that come with recruiting D1 sports any longer, especially considering the system has been flipped upside down, quickly, the last few years.

He quit, mid season.

He quit on the kids he recruited. It's pathetic.

Does he have health issues or something? If so, he should say that. I'm old and my health is failing so I regret I must quit during the middle of the season.

He can't wait three months to quit? He quits on HIS current team because players left 18 months ago....because they wanted market rate compensation?

Oh, he's exhausted.

What an asshat way to end your career.

It was talked about this past offseason.

His team currently has losses to VCU, Charleston Southern, Mount Saint Mary's, and Drake (at least they're undefeated).

Maybe a sizable portion of his roster has said they’re portaling after the season. If that were the case, would you want him to say that publicly?

Regardless, people complain on here all the time about how stupid the portal is and how bad it is for college athletics…then when a coach decides to hang it up because they hate it too, some of the same people think it’s pathetic. Just a really arse backwards logic I see on here but whatever

He just turned 75 in October, so honestly, it was about time he called it quits.

From back in October of this year, speaking to Bennett announcing his retirement:

quote:

"I got into coaching because my high school coach was my role model. One of the things I learned from him in my observation of his career is to just make adjustments and deal with what the issues you are dealing with. My own personal philosophy is I'm here to just educate young men and using the game of basketball to do it with."

Larrañaga continued.

"I'm an educator, I'm a teacher. I like to work with the players during practice. I like to get to know them on the court and off the court and I like to prepare them for life when they are no longer bouncing the basketball," Larrañaga said.

Did they quit mid season?

Seems like they gave him plenty of time to find adequate replacements and he could not.

His current players are now left without a head coach and can’t do anything to replace him.

All very noble sentiments.

There still is half a season left.

A season that he was being paid 2.5 million to coach.

It’s just funny that he’s trying to get on his high horse now.

I didn't share that in support of him.

That was his tune immediately prior to the season. Now, after an abysmal start, a seven game losing streak, and a warming seat that has seen some call for his retirement he decides to hang it up instead of seeing it out.

Indeed. The hypocrites abound.

I, myself, haven't fussed one bit about the portal or NIL. I also have never bashed a coach for leaving for a different school/more money.

But, you are correct when you say that many of those who hate on the portal and nil often encourage teams to pursue coaches from other teams in order to raise their own programs.

That's fine, according to them. Need an OC, hire one from some other school....offer him more money. Need a recruiter, pay the best recruiter on some other staff to leave for more money.

Need a starting QB.....oh wait, don't pay one......That's evil!!! How dare some kid try to secure his financial future like that. Greedy bastards. They are ruining college sports....these greedy, greedy college athletes.

How many millions did that head coach at Miami bank again over his career......teaching?

I suppose he couldn't teach and be fulfilled at George Mason. He's a mentor, ya know.

A real mentor who actually cared about the players would encourage them to seek financial security if the opportunity presented itself. A self centered jerk off.....wouldn't.

The topic at hand concerns the repercussions of 'Transfer Portal'. It just so happens that the subject in question also coached basketball. The OP stands corrected.

That’s what the adults get to do. They get to take a job in a bigger conference for more money. If these kids are so damn good at basketball, go to the GLeague like some of the recent cats have. Oh, what’s that? They like the pampered life of a D1 athlete and the platform it gives them? Sorry, these athletes are kids and have a different set of rules.
