This is absolutely a big part of it. Alabama was ranked something like 15th in the first NET rankings, at which point we were 10-3 and all the resume/record rankings had us in the Top 5. It was entirely because of our efficiency numbers, mainly defense.

Since then we 3-3 and we've only dropped to 21st. That's mainly because our efficiency numbers haven't changed all that much.

I guess UK didn’t so much rise as LSU dropped a spot behind them. The system doesn’t penalize a team much for losing a game on the road against a top team. Just have to avoid “bad losses” to crappy teams.

Zags are #2. They have played more Q4 games than Q1-3.

You have to go down to #14 to find a team who has played as few games against Q4 as Auburn.

Auburn has the best record in the nation against Q1 and Q2.

I am not saying Auburn should be #1, but they damn sure shouldn't be 5th.

ETA and Auburn's lone loss was a Q1 double OT loss in an early season tourney.

You’d think Tony Barbee was still the coach this morning with your attitude.

I wouldn’t put Arizona, Gonzaga, or Houston above Auburn right now. I’m really curious what the game changer is.

Baylor doesn’t really have a good case right now either from the eyeball test. I hope we can sweep them.

It's all about efficiency rankings. And for the record, I'm with you, I don't like it at all.

We have a bunch of very good efficiency ranking systems out there (Torvik, KenPom). Use those for efficiency. Make the NET a better version of the RPI - a tool that measures nothing but results. I don't care how you won or lost the games (I'll look at KP or Torvik for that), I want to know what games you won, who they were against, where they were, and see a ranking that incorporates all of that.

A ranking to judge your strength of record and a separate ranking to judge "how good you play".

It shouldn't be hard. I don't know why they changed the NET formula to add more efficiency stuff.

Torvik's "Wins Above Bubble" is probably most in line with what I'd prefer NET be.

It's currently Top 10 and SEC

1. Auburn
2. Baylor
3. Kansas
4. Wisconsin
5. Michigan State
6. Arizona
7. LSU
8. Villanova
9. Providence
10. Gonzaga

21. Tennessee
22. Alabama
27. Kentucky
49. Texas A&M
60. Arkansas
69. Florida
74. Mississippi State
85. South Carolina
120. Vanderbilt
146. Missouri
160. Ole Miss
307. Georgia

I thought Auburn was in the top 20 in both O and D efficiency?

Auburn is currently 35th in offense and 16 in defense. I guess that is what is keeping them somewhat down.

This is the other thing - per my reading of the newest NET criteria, I'm almost positive that they do NOT do an opponent adjustment (which all the efficiency ranking sites do - Torvik, KP, etc).

If that is the case, then teams with tough schedules are getting hammered for having lower raw numbers. Alabama's raw defensive number is like #205th nationally. Their opponent adjusted one is like #75. That's because Alabama has played, by far, the #1 collection of offenses in the country. Yet, their raw numbers are treated the same as Lehigh who has played the #344 best collection of offenses.

That's just stupid.
