coincidentally, the replay of last year's game is on the ESPN networks' channel now and that onside kick just occurred.

It was at that moment that Dabo knew. He'd been Saban'd.

After it happened, I remember thinking, that I didn't know which was more rare. An onside kick with a lot time left in a national championship game, or Nick Saban smiling on the sideline.

Yes, and he told me ,and us, that Dabo going to Bama, after Saban is done would be a lateral move. Then he called us arrogant for disagreeing with him. He is such a homer, he is by far my favorite Clemson poster.

If a kicker can consistently put the ball that high in the air on kickoffs, i don't understand why it doesnt happen more often. You have 11 guys barreling downfield knowing where the ball is going, with the freedom to mow down everyone in front of them. Seems like a good chance you will get the ball. I guess the key is consistency in putting the ball that high..

That and if the receiving team has anyone in the area, I'm pretty sure they can call a fair catch. The kicking team would have to give them the opportunity to catch a pooch kick like that (as opposed to the traditional onside kick that is directed into the ground and becomes a "live ball" after 10 yards).

Seems that I remember Saban saying that they had run that play in practice throughout the year and that was the first time it was successful.

LOL...that was an excellent OS kick...the Clemson players this year I am sure have been taught to call fair catch on anything like that.

Yeah, the only reason that kind of onside kick worked is because nobody ever does it. It's not done because there's an easy way for the receiving team to prevent it. But, Saban knew they wouldn't know that because it's never done.

If the Clemson player was really on point, he could have quickly called for fair catch while running over there. And he may have had an argument. But the element of surprise worked for Bama here
