Why would he renegotiate a contract only for himself to lose money? This cat aint so smart. He's gone either way.

You're asking this about a guy who threw a pass to his FG kicker on 4th down.

I don't believe it's true. It's been noted that Malzahn was in South Carolina this afternoon recruiting when this supposed negotiation went down.

Snapchat, man. That's how these things are done nowadays.

The initial negotiations happened on Sunday. Gus is basically betting 5 million on himself.

I get that..... but if he wins he only gets the 5 mil back he bet with so why risk 5 mil

I think Gus enjoys Auburn and (delusionally) believes he can turn it around and win next year.
My gut feeling is that this contract renegotiation has been kept under wraps but that prominent boosters not happy with Malzahn and Leath leaked the details in order to sabotage both and worsen the situation so that a change has to be made

That makes sense for why they would try and sabotage Malzahn, but why would he agree to reducing his buyout and putting restrictions on personnel/salaries? It just doesn't make sense, even if he thinks he can right the ship, he's still sort of hamstringing himself from making coaching changes.

auNecks never stop trying to impress on others that they have a vast intellect. Even on a sports message board, they use fancy French words like tralier to show that they are true intelligentsia.
Impressive or pitifully sad?

I think the AU PTB went in there acing as if they were ready to pay the buyout (and this is the reason they leaked their discussions with Stoops to the press - to make Gus think they were serious). Gus, realizing he may be fired, decides to renegotiate agreeing to pay any assistant raises (raises for new hires) out of his own pocket.
I think AU was hoping they could encourage Gus to resign and take another job, all the while the official story being that it was his decision. But Gus didn't go for it and wants to stay put. So it became a game of chicken. They had to convince Gus they were ready to pull the trigger on a massive buyout. Sure he'd be set for life, but it would take years, if ever, before he'd coach an FBS program again. These guys live to coach, the money isn't everything.
So it seems Gus and AU came to some agreement (I don't know the details) where AU saves a little bit of money due to this craptacular season. Gus has already donated several million out of his own pocket for a new athletic complex (happened a while back) so he is a reasonable guy in that regard.

Either he is an idiot or the PTB have dirt on him.

This situation reminds me a lot of the Alabama program in Mike Shula's last year. Apparently the sticking point with Shula was having to agree to an "oversight" committee that would basically dictate staff hirings, firings, etc.. Shula balked, and they fired him.

There's no way in hell Sexton would allow that. Auburn is basically asking Gus to frick himself so they can fire him next year and not give him as much money. The only way this makes sense is if Gus has some dirty laundry that might find its way into the press if he refuses to take it.

Well there are those pictures of him knowing a couple of goats.
Knowing in the biblical way.
Think that would make the president of the school happy?

We suck. And I don’t even hate Gus anymore because people stopped bowing to his arse and he is finally being held accountable.
