What is the deal with Malzahn? He was supposed to be this passing guru out of Springdale and Houston Nutt hired him to get all their great players and Gus was going to open up the offense. Of course D-Mac and the wildcat put the brakes on that, but IIRC, he was all about passing as a high school coach.

Pretty much the same at Auburn as he was in High School. Get the ball in mismatches and the best players hand.

Move quicker for mismatches.

Gus is, at heart, a Wing T coach. He's all about misdirection and mismatches. His teams did chunk the ball around but usually after he lured the safeties in to help stop the run. So you will see some of his teams from that era with a ton of passing yards.

You have to remember that no one in Arkansas was running that type of offense and only a handful of people around the country were running anything like it at all. It must have seemed like the second coming of the Wishbone in how it completely changed things.

Unfortunately for Gus he hasn't changed things. He's running the same offense now that he was then. Now people know how to stop it though. They might not have the players to do it, but they have the gameplan. He has not evolved his system and it shows.

Well he brought his HS plays with him and refused to ever even once add any kind of new plays, blocking schemes, routes or trees, or any more complexity to his offense. Not even once
