As an Undrafted Free Agent.

Sources: Undrafted Kansas guard Malik Newman has agreed to a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Signs with Mississippi State as a top 10 Recruit, draft stock dips to nothing. Transfers to Kansas and has to sit out for a year. Plays a full year of Kansas, and he still cannot get drafted.

I guess you would say he was one of the biggest busts of all time.

He was a complete bust. His career at Kansas only highlighted his issues even more. 3 games will not get you drafted. And this is the result.

It's a good thing he didn't come to UK.

Thanks for telling us you only watched their last couple of games. He was trash all year until tournament time.

Malik was the result of overzealous recruitnik types trying to scoop everyone else by ranking 7th and 8th graders.
In the 9th grade he was basically the same player that enrolled at MSU. That made him the #1 high school freshman in the country, and he rode that hype for 5 years

I dont think you understand what this actually means.

Newman averaged 14 points, 5 boards and 2 assists per game while shooting 42% from 3 with a nearly 20 PER at a blue blood basketball school.

That's literally the opposite definition of a "Bust". You're just extremely butthurt he left MSU for greener pastures and showed out.

You think? Tyler Ulis or Malik Newman? I think we came out well on that one.

Yeah Newman was in no way a bust. Loved watching him play this year at Kansas. Was good throughout the B12 schedule.

Agreed. Newman had a good career. But, he was sold as the #1 recruit in the country when he signed with MSU, so I don't blame some fans. Going undrafted would be a bust for the #1 player in the land. It wasn't his fault

#1 recruit? He was 10th and the class was not strong besides the “next Lebron”. Plus the services did not evaluate that class well (look at Donavan Mitchell at #47.)

Newman was a better fit a Kansas...he needed to be surrounded by better players to help his game.

I didn't say he was #1, I said he was sold to the MSU fans as #1. I guess he had been #1 in that class when they were freshmen or sophs, and so he was always referred as Top Recruit Malik Newman. For a fanbase that doesn't follow basketball recruiting very much it was an easy sell

No, I think he knows exactly what it means. Those are nice stats for a high 3 star low 4 star recruit .This guy was a 5 star can't miss Top 10(1 on some lists) recruit who didn't even get drafted. Yeah, he's a huge bust.

14 points, 5 boards on a BLUE BLOOD shooting 42% from 3 is really great numbers. Plenty of Kentucky players dont even do that and are considered very good still. Did you expect him to average 25 points a game at KU or something? Those are not even REMOTELY close to "huge bust" numbers. Those are very very good numbers for a guy on a blue blood, especially shooting 42% from 3. Very efficient. He was playing with the Big 12 POY in senior Graham who got drafted and another very good senior in Mykhailuk who also got drafted. Also a really good big in Azubuike who will also be rafted eventually.

The dude was not some cant miss all world #1 overall player. He was #10 in his class and those a very very good numbers for a guy playing his 2nd season. Just because he went undrafted means nothing, he had a great year at Kansas. MSU could have really used him. Just because MSU landed a 5-star doesnt mean he should be all world at a blue blood school playing with other NBA players and very experienced ones at that.
