I just looked at the depth chart from 2020-21.
If we had talent like that in 2022 or 2023 we would have been in the playoff.

Why do LSU fans think this year will be a big jump for the defense?

O took a national championship program and had it on life support inside of 2 years. The poor discipline, laziness and lack of accountability you speak of were all seeded by Orgeron.
You and many others have no idea how bad off the program was when Kelly was hired. O's mismanagement his last 2 years should have set LSU back a decade.
This is the first year Kelly has had that has seen all those players cycled out.

I can’t wait for the next thread about how much Auburn and Bama hate each other
We only get like three or four a year now

Why would anyone who’s followed LSU ever think there might be a big jump?

More success than Auburn in said timeframe. Just goes to show the difference in how outside fans expect out of each program.

2024 Payton Thorne had a better quarterback ranking than 2022 Jayden Daniels or 2024 Nussmeier.

Its time for LSU fans to admit Bryan Kelly was a colossal failure of a hire.
Yep, I'll admit it... LSU shouldn't have hired him as the DC. But just think, if LSU had a legit DC then maybe BK would be undefeated against AU. Oh wait.... he is.

BK just doesn’t understand how physical these teams need to be. And cussing in practice won’t make them physical.

If we needed a FG to tie, he would take a sack and back us outta range. If we needed a TD, he would throw a pick. PT and RA were the worst one two punch ive ever seen at Auburn.

2024 - ranked 14th in the SEC
I recall our D ranking in top 60 nationally which is solid but usually you want to be top 50 or higher to be championship-caliber, probably means quality of defense in 2024 SEC improved against the mean.

2023 - ranked 13th in the SEC
Matt Moscona out of Baton Rouge constantly refers to this defense as the “worst defense in school history” not sure whether that’s technically true considering LSU fans lived through the 90s and 2020 with Bo Pelini wasn’t much better; nevertheless, it was excruciating watching that defense play that season

Compared to what?
Rounded up he’s averaged 10 wins/season as LSU skipper and made the SEC title game year 1. LSU’s been ranked in the top 25 basically 70-75% of his tenure and in the top 10 numerous weeks.

It is curious how many threads get started about LSU but everyone here says they don't care about LSU.

LSU’s defense should be better. But it likely won’t be great. Kelly’s defenses have, with few exceptions, always gotten lit up like a Christmas tree when facing top 25 teams
I fully realize that LSU will have to prove it, in order for anyone to believe it. I will have to see it too.
But… with that said… if you followed our team like I do, it’s beyond obvious that this years defense will be significantly better.
1 - We had trash as DT’s last year and no depth. Our best DT (Jacobian Guillory) had a season ending injury before the season even started. Our 5 star FR DT, McKinley, who was hurt most the season, came on strong, and played very well in the last few games of the season last year will be a starter this season. A transfer from USF is looking very strong and will be a starter at the other DT spot. Guillory, who was our best, by far DT in the summer last year, can’t crack the starting lineup this year.
Our DE’s are significantly better this year with 5 star soph Relliford and transfers Payton from Florida State and Jack Pyburn from Florida.
Wes Weeks, who really played well at middle LB is back manning the middle this season. And… most importantly, Harold Perkins Jr is back after getting injured in the 3rd Quarter of the USC game last year and missing the entire season.
Safeties was the weakest part of the team last year, by far. It was beyond trash. The safety position group was improved drastically with transfers Tarmarcus Cooley all ACC from NC State and All Big 12 AJ Haulcey
Our cornerbacks will be significantly better with 5 star, best high school CB in the country last year DJ Pickett and transfers Mansoor Delane from Virginia Tech and JaKeem Jackson from Florida and returning starter JR Ashton stamps.
Every single position group has a massive talent upgrade through recruiting and key transfers over last year’s defense.
