Had the nation known that Bama would be destroyed last year the viewership would have tripled! The large numbers this year was that everyone knew it was going to be a good game and wanted to see for themselves, "Joe Burrow and the Greatest Show on Turf"!

Nah... that's not really a very high number. In fact, since the creation of the BCS in 1998, this season's game between LSU and Clemson rated #15 out of 22 in terms of television ratings.
The sad truth is that America cares more when a major program from outside the Deep South is involved.... it's no coincidence that the Top 5 most watched games all involved either Ohio State or Texas.

I think you can make a strong case that LSU is the worst television draw for a National Title Game.
All four Championship games in which its been involved in have been among the 8 lowest rated in terms of viewership.... and they even brought down ratings-juggernaut Ohio State back in 2007.
Ohio State's title games are ranked #2, #4, #5.... and then all the way back at #20 when they played LSU.

You are correct. Oregon actually brings in huge numbers. When Oregon is playing in a National Title game, the Portland market hits over a 30.0 rating yet its the type of market that might score just a 4.0 or a 5.0 when the Ducks aren't involved.
College football has a major problem in that its becoming entirely too Deep South centric. We need for someone outside of Ohio State to step up in the Midwest and we need a West Coast team to become a legitimate contender for the good of the sport.

Again.... no coincidence that the four teams who seem to bring in the most viewers are all outside the Deep South. SEC Country is all going to tune in no matter who is playing. But Texas and the rest of the country tunes in with far higher concentration only when a major team from outside the SEC is involved.
Georgia and Florida have the most potential in the SEC due the large television markets in those states. Atlanta is the #1 college football viewing market by a longshot in terms of total viewers.... so Georgia playing in the game in 2017 helped bring in some viewers that might not have tuned in otherwise. With Orlando, Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville all inside the state of Florida, the Gators also have huge viewership potential.
The Birmingham market is by far the #1 CFB market in terms of concentration.... routinely trippling the next closest market in terms of ratings. However, the Birmingham market tunes in for EVERY big game whether one of their teams is involved or not, so Bama doesn't bring in the viewership numbers one would think.

A combination of schools from high population states in different regions of the country and a super-close game with last second heroics. All the elements to make for a high rating.
No real reason for this to be this high except for this:
It was the first CFP finale. The game wasn't close, Oregon doesn't bring a huge fan base.
Two big name programs, but more so was the fact that Texas started a come back before Alabama put it away - this brought in a lot of viewers who were otherwise just watching the score.
The second highest CFP finale, despite both being from the same region. This was the most thrilling set of playoff games, and the only finale to go into OT. A very thrilling overtime led to a huge following.
Two big names, but a drop off in viewership as most fans outside of the two programs already knew it wasn't going to be close.
Thanks to a growing amount of potential viewers, the LSU game with the most viewers has the lowest rating.
A rematch of a defensive slugfest was probably not terribly appealing to non-fans of the two programs.
Yeah, another big blow out made the game unattractive to anyone who either wasn't a Clemson fan or Alabama hater.
Oklahoma's one win in this list is the third highest rated game; but they do show up on the loser column and awful lot. (Oklahoma is 1-3 in BCS title games and 0-5 in playoff games)

Increase is due to illegals who'd stolen all of Sears TV's and watched the game on the streets of L.A.
