To say who is and who isn't a contender in early August is just silly.

Shows how desperate most of us are to talk about ANYthing football related by this late offseason date

true that

you can evaluate talent this early, based off of recruiting and returning players. But no one knows how a season will play out.

Until we've seen them play.. I'm going to go ahead and say no, LSU is not contending for the national championship game. We'll contend for the SEC-west, I hope.

By contender, I mean that LSU has a team that *could* gel and win it all, based on the talent on the roster and key positions. I would not call them a favorite, but a potential contender.

In theory, most major teams could be called contenders before they play a game, but I think it would be silly to expect Ole Miss or Nebraska or Georgia Tech to be in the title game. LSU, with a couple breaks and growth in key positions, could be there.

There's a big difference between a team with a roster full of talent having question marks at QB, and a team expected to be mediocre to weak on defense and/or thin at skill positions.

LSU will contend next year, too much inexperience at QB and WR to do so now.

Not this year. Too many question marks

To me the only question marks we are going to have is at DT due to depth, but if we stay healthy should be okay there and then obviously QB. From the practice reports, the rest of the units look good and ready to go....even at WR. Peeps seem to forget John Diarse...I think he has a break out season and I love the trio of him, Dural and Dupre. If we have only half decent QB play, this team will win a lot of games.

At the end of each season, I like to go back and look at the experts preseason predictions. Always entertaining and we all know this in our heads, but get caught up in pure speculation the next summer. How many had the Auburn-Mizzou battle in Atlanta. Who had the Gators winning 4 games? Who had the Vols beating USCe last year. If you look at the other conferences, you can find the same anomalies.

LSU has as much talent as anyone so, yes, they are a national title contender.

quote:

The spread in talent is so thin at the top of the conference that the team picked 5th in the preseason could easily be a couple of bounces or breaks away from finishing first. There isn't a clear dominant team this year so it's not that unreasonable to lump the top 5 in as NC contenders.

This is true.

LSU is not a national title contender.

I like the schedule, I think we could make a run at Atlanta.

You say this like it's 1998.

It's 2014. SEC West Title = National Title.

quote:

LSU will contend next year

I thought this until I realized we'll be losing 3 or 4 offensive linemen after this year. Everywhere else looks stacked, but no year is perfect. If we're good enough to win it all in '15 or '16 we're good enough to win it this year. We don't even know what the team will look like in '16.
