So Saban wasn’t worth the money you paid

It can be debated whether any coach is worth $10 million per year. But if any coach was worth it, Saban was.

Now we will get to see if Lane Kiffin is worth $21 million per year. Add $40+ million in NIL deals, then another $20 million in revenue sharing, plus another $10 million on assistants, throw in a couple million more on ADs and support staff, plus all the other scholarship/travel/material costs and LSU football is going to spend over $100 million on football in 2026.

If someone five years ago had claimed that LSU was going to spend over $100 million in 2026 on football they would have been locked in a padded room.

In 2025, LSU football spent around $50 million ($70 million including NIL) and generated around $115 million in revenue. They used that $60 million dollar profit to subsidize the non-profitable sports like baseball, gymnastics and women’s basketball.

LSU is doubling their expenses this year. We will see what that does to their profit. And what that does to other sports that rely on football profits.

This is what happens when you spend all your money on coaches instead of English teachers and psychiatrists.

How many coaches are coaching in their current job that won championships at another school before they were hired?

Dude really went off the deep end when Kiffin was hired at LSU.

John Calipari and Rick Pitino come to mind.

And get paid $200 million? Only one school would be dumb enough to do that.

So, between the two of you, you can only think of 2. Got it. Thank you.

Great analogy and I'm here for it!

You care more about LSU sports than most LSU fans.

and if the gamble fails?

It'd take a lot for it to really fail. BK's buyout was basically offset by the jersey patch deal. The hiring of Kiffin and Wade will give attendance a huge shot in the arm for at least the first two years.

Just to "make money", LSU needs over next two years to:(per Peter Burns):

quote:

CFB: 2 Playoff Bids, 1 Deep Run
MBB: 2 Tournament Bids, 1 Sweet 16 Run
WBB: At least 1 Final Four Run
BSB: 2 CWS bids, 1 Title Run

LSU doesn't need all 4 to hit, just 2/3 but Football HAS to be 1 of them. If you hit 2 of 3 those goals with Football, you'll bring in around $100M in direct sports revenue.
Booster/Donor surge:
quote:

Estimating $100M in donations over 2 years.
Tuition: Turning LSU into national brand vs state brand
Out of state students 2022: 32%
Out of state students 2024: 40%
If you grow that by 8% again: $50M extra.
Media Value: LSU already Top 3 (If not #1) brand in college space. If this works, LSU likely grabs additional $25M in Media exposure

quote:

If plan works: $100M in Athletic revenue $100M in Donations $50M in Tuition bump + (25M in Media Value) $250M payoff on $200M invested
(Would actually be $275M)

So best case scenario, you hit on those goals and you make all of the money (plus some) back in two years.

More realistic, is you're just better and you pay all of this off over 4-6 years.

The only way this fails, is if you need to buy one of these guys out (or Mulkey) very quickly, which isn't likely. Even Kelly got 4 years.

It’s wild that university dedicates more money to sports than improving their academics.
