Damn, this thread is kind of sad.

The rest of the SEC should start a go fund me for LSU.

Bobby isn't to blame for this. This all boils down to Louisiana needing government reform in the worst way. If i remember correctly the only budgets that are NOT protected from budget cuts are Higher education, health care, and maybe one other that escapes me at the moment. There is way too much fluff being spent in the protected budgets. When cuts are needed the first thing they wack is higher education.

Normally i would agree, but Jindal is responsible for this. He put his presidential ambitions first, and he destroyed the state's fiscal standing to appease certain political group's scorecards. A similar situation happened in Maryland. In both cases, their successor is of the other party in states that shouldn't happen

Not to jump down a never ending political hole but didn't a lot of it start with Jindal? Or was that just coincidental that he was in office when energy revenues began to decline?

Jindal wasn't a real conservative. He was a chronic panderer and was for sale to the highest bidder. His board appointments were horrific.

So the athletic department is flush with cash, but the academic portion of the school is broke? Am I the only one that thinks this is backwards as hell. I mean third world country backwards. Are folks in Louisiana ok with how their limited resources are being spent?

Again, for the fricking umpteenth time, the athletics department is privately funded by TAF which runs off of philanthropic donations. Not one red cent of taxpayer money is ever spent on LSU athletics.

In fact, TAF runs at such a surplus, they donate millions of dollars each year to the university for academic and infrastructure improvements.

Athletics are not to blame, they are the answer.

Was it an issue pre-Jindal or did Jindal just have the best chance to fix a broken system?

It was starting to happen pre-Jindal and he did nothing to stop it, despite having the best shot to fix it with a republican legislature backing him.

He cared more about a bullshite presidential run and pretending he was a Creationist to pander far right-wing votes.

The state constitution is a travesty and needs to be completely thrown out.

I do know this, even if a shortfall of funding was the rationale for the hiring of Orgeron it may have been a blessing in disguise since he appears to be doing great.

His best record is 10-3. That's hardly great.

As a conservative, I have no problem saying Jindal was a colossal disappointment.

Louisiana's state constitution has been rewritten 9 times, more than any other state in the union. The 10th constitution would be written by the same kind of butthorns that wrote the first 9, and at this point, they'd probably be personal injury lawyers.

The best way to fix politics in Louisiana is to have Texas annex the state.

Agree completely. Why does everything have to be bipartisan? Democrat, conservative, who gives a flip? We force these politicians to choose a side and then they become scorned when they vote the wrong way. News flash, both sides are fkin lunatics.

The one thing they all have in common, especially in Louisiana, is they're all corrupt. With the energy industry in the pits, all the top oil execs had to diversify and find ways to stay afloat. Most of them did this (and still do) by lobbying the state officials for cush contracts. Every single politician in Louisiana is in it for themselves, and they are all bought. Every. Single. One. If you've ever worked with any of them, you've probably experienced ego-induced vomiting.

I once witnessed an unnamed local municipality create a $5M project under the mirage of "public safety" so that a state representative could get a new bulkhead. That's a small fish, I know. Scale this up 100x and you have 90% of the state funded projects along the coast. 3 families own over 90% of the coastal property in Louisiana.

To answer the OPs question, it's corruption at all levels of government and big business, and it will never get fixed.

False.

A portion of all employees' salaries in the athletic department is funded by the state, however, there is a cap to state funded salaries as defined by law. This is where TAF comes in.

Here's an old article that goes into more detail.

It's an issue whenever the price of oil drops to around $40/bbl.

It's hysterical to watch as ignorant Louisianans blame governors for bad times, and credit governors for good times, when the economy in Louisiana is strictly dependent on the price of oil. One major problem is that budget surpluses tend to go towards pork projects instead of retiring state debt.

In Louisiana, we pray for high political tensions in the Middle East, it tends to drive up the price of oil, and thus help our economy.

Corruption, same as the country at large. Skimmers, day traders, hedge fund managers didn't build this country...

Not even if we put a pair of bright orange longhorns on top of the state capitol and blow it up?

C'mon, if that doesn't make your dick move, you're not an aggy.

Meh, that's a myth, Baton Rouge is essentially the head of navigation for the river. It gets too shallow upstream from there for sea-going vessels.

LSU (the university part) has always been underfunded. Why?

1. State corruption/poor leadership.
2. Too many colleges in Louisiana splitting the relatively small pie.
