The hope is why we watch this game and losing game 1 makes you shoot for the b tier bowl games. Maybe college football need to fix this but as it stands, nothing to play for except pride

No team that has lost their first game has ever made the playoffs.

Yikes.

It can definitely cost you a national championship. In 1975, Alabama lost their first game to Missouri by the score of 20-7. We dropped from #2 in the polls to #14. We ended up running the table in the regular season with our closest wins occurring against Mississippi State (21-10) and LSU (23-10). We then defeated #8 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl but it was too little to late. We finished #3 in both polls behind Oklahoma and Arizona State.

It’s more that you no longer control your own destiny

Made me think of the 1990 season...Tennessee tied Colorado in the season opener (when you could still tie in college football) and Colorado finished the season as the AP #1 and MNC.

It is possible to lose first game and still make playoffs. That’s unless you are the only game on tv like a Sunday night when everyone is watching you get wrecked

Got to be the absolute worst losing four season openers in a row. All to teams you should have beaten.

don't agree. There's NO WAY that if LSU runs the table, wins the SEC CCG, that they are not in the NC.

Hell, they could even lose a conference game, win the West and the conference and they'd still be in.

Nothing to play for? glad you aint coaching MY boys!

95% chance LSU still controls their own destiny. The only thing keeping them out is a Big XII and PAC12 champs going undefeated.

Feel like it depends on the teams as well. Undefeated Texas or OU will stay ahead of LSU. Undefeated Houston? I'm not so sure.

I would like to say it also depends on how good FSU ends up being, but Ohio State lost to a pretty bad VT team by 2 TDs (at home no less) in 2014 and still made it over Baylor and TCU.

Interesting observation. Seems like you have an excellent grasp of this concept.

In the extensive history of the 9 year playoff? Mind blown.

To me the worst is losing a game before a bye week so you have 2 full weeks to stew about it.
