Iron Bowls are played during tornado warnings. Nobody leaves.
In the case of the 1983 Iron Bowl, Chance Corbin, remembers the stormiest Iron Bowl, looking at his dad, asking if they were going to leave and his dad looked at him and said, “It’s the Iron Bowl, we’re not going anywhere.”

There was this UGA game they delayed in Williams-Brice 20-25 years ago. Heckuva storm came through.
Drunk dawg fans went into the breezeways barking in everyone else's faces.
Lightening hit west upper corner ... we saw it come down the lights in the corner lower right in front of the press box. It was impressive. It messed up the seats there ... people would have died.
Don't mess with lightening in stadiums. It's not worth it. It's literally like a bomb going off.

April 28, 1950 - Jim Martin of the Shreeveport Sports was struck by lightning during their game against the Abilene Blue Sox. He was knocked unconscious, but lived.
More recently...July 4, 2023 a soccer ref, Mustapha Belloin, was struck by lightning on the field during a game in Nigeria, and died.
July 27, 2022...Coors Field was struck by lightning during a storm delay when the Rockies were hosting the Giants.

last week thunder sounded distant as I looked out my bay window at the beginning of a mild rain. Then a missile of electrical fire / thunderbolt hit one of our oaks about 40 feet from the house. Looked like it came from a nuclear sub. The house rattled like an old time roller coaster. The tree bark disappeared from the tree. Stood there stunned watching a naked tree and a few minutes later most of the tree dropped to the ground. I think the lightning rule is a good one.

Easily one of the most obnoxious things a fanbase does in all of college football.

It's never happened because we take the appropriate amount of caution.
Absolutely untrue. We've been doing this for less than 30 years. It used to be we'd play the game through tornado warnings. It took a lightning strike just outside the stadium to stop play in the 1994 Alabama-Ole Miss game.

An entire soccer team was killed and 30+ others injured in a lighting strike in Africa some years back.
Every year, soldiers are killed in training exercises due to lightning. An ROTC Cadet was killed a few years ago during an evacuation effort for lightning warnings.
It happens.

I was in right field on a ball field one time when lightning struck a power pole that was way too close to me. That was my education about lightning. It’s a good rule.

I'm not sure I've seen this many people write "lightening" instead of lightning in one place.

The videos of sporting events in developing countries (with no regulations) where entire teams collapse after a lighting strike are jarring

One of our rival high schools had a football player get struck in the head and killed in the early 90s.

A very good friend of mine was a West Point grad and there was a storm and they had their rifles in a stack. Lightning hit the rifles, but still carried over to him. he ended up losing his hearing in one year over it.
I think the weather delays are here to stay, but these stadiums have to have better plans for severe weather.

Ugh!
It's never an issue until it happens to someone you know!

Tragic. The one spot where you never want to get hit by lightning, and he gets it there.
Unlucky.

This proves that folks in Alabama aren’t very smart.
