This is a pretty good article about how defenses will shut down the spread and how players that are in the spread offense are not very well suited for the NFL. It says that this is exploited in recruiting.

Enjoy!!

There were several good articles about that yesterday. One reason I'm glad Les has kept the pro-set base offense for LSU while allowing Crowton to throw in a lot of spread-type wrinkles into the mix.

doesn't seem to bother Jonathan Stewart, Steve Slaton, Wes Welker, etc. If you can play football, you can play football.

Noticed you left the QB position out of there.

hmmmm, Colt Brennan? My thinking behind that is Auburn has only one QB (Jason Campbell) in the NFL under a normal offense so it is not like we were beating down the NFL doors with QB talent anyways. Same for Bama (Brodie Croyle). I don't think QBs come to Auburn or Alabama if they want to go to the NFL.

A rookie QB who was drafted low is your example of NFL success for Spread QBs?

He is the only one I could think of.

Alex Smith - BUST
Dennis Dixon?
Vince Young - BUST (I am declaring it)

Hard to call the guy a bust when he's been throwing to... that one guy and umm... that other receiver they have.

Tenn has the horrible WR talent. Good thing they drafted a 3rd down back with their first pick.

I am in total agreement. Never seen anyone as shitty a passer as Young get such a pass from everyone.

He's just like Mike Vick, except that he is slower and is a worse passer. No wonder no one wants to play WR in Tennessee.

Seems like Burn could be in some shite this year. Wish OM had the corners to shut down the spread. The reason that 5 star RB Enrique Davis is at Ole Miss instead of Burn is because they switched to the spread. He called Nutt, Nutt had no idea who he was. The spread benefits pro-style offenses.

Dodd, along with 90% of football fans, doesn't understand what the spread is. He interchanges "spread" and "spread option" as if they're the same thing.

The spread, like most offensive packages that were "hot" will cool down, but I don't think it will ever die. It's just too logical a system to ever go away. You can run out of it, pass out of it, run option out of it.

Sure the spread isn't big in the NFL. The corners are too good and nobody wants their franchise QB to take hits and sacks. But guess what...college coaches only care about winning, not what the pros are doing.

Dodd is a complete idiot. He has BYU ranked ahead of LSU to start the season. That's all you need to know about him.

We really don't know about these two yet.

I watched the Falcons-Titans preseason game and Vince Young looked horrible. He was over/under throwing WRs and making bad decisions. On the other hand Matt Ryan tore it up. Matt Ryan looked to leaps and bounds ahead of Vince Young as a QB in the NFL. Although Matt Ryan didn't look as good in his second game.

Just checked his stats. 9 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last year with 395 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Pretty much the shittiest starting QB in the NFL last year that played the entire season.

Hahaha, Dennis Dodd said that? I guess we should go ahead and fire Franklin.

Colt Brennan has absolutely torn it up this pre-season. He could turn out to be a very good one one day.

That being said this article is stupid. The spread offense is still a very "new" thing in CFB and many teams are still adapting it. Believe it or not, some NFL teams will also start going to more spread type looks over the course of the next few seasons (maybe not with running QBs as much, simply because of the value of the position in the NFL).

Vick?? Couldn't hit a sleeping bloodhound, and I'm sure he tried.
