quote:We've known for quite some time that a Big 12 made of mostly Texas schools, OU and a few Midwestern basketball schools wasn't sustainable and we'd eventually have to leave.
It’s been obvious over the years that this is true. When they didn’t get their preferential treatment they threatened or leaked that they were looking to join the Pac12 and also the Big10. Not letting them in would have kept Texas down a notch and would have been better overall for the SEC.
They want to be independent like Notre Dame and do whatever they want, but they can’t get a NBC deal like ND has.
Big 10 really wasn't our style, Pac 12 has been on shaky ground far longer than just a year or two ago and even though we've pretty much had a standing invitation to the SEC for 40 years there were several roadblocks that had to be cleared first..
1. We had to ensure our rivalry with OU remained intact and the only way to guarantee that goes uninterrupted is to be in the same conference
2. Little Bros like TTech and aggy would insist on going wherever we did, (Baylor as well, but far less pull in the Texas Lege) so when aggy went SEC a few years before we decided to that roadblock was cleared and we decided keeping Tech people happy wasnt worth it.
3. Texas BMD's expect winning football and competing for a national title at least once a decade yet are extremely reluctant to play the old SEC bag game. They knew that only our small money people playing that way wouldn't be enough to compete for recruits in the SEC, but the SCOTUS decision on NIL changed that forever. Yes, some teams (like aggy and others) still supplement their legit NIL with the traditional bag, but that sort of thing isn't sustainable and becoming increasingly more irrelevant. We'll still lose a player or two because of it, but not enough to make a huge difference the way things were pre-NIL.
So to sum up, the combination of aggy already being in the SEC and OU being in the same predicament we were and needing to leave (we were both able to cut ties with the remaining lil bros, Okie State and Tech can go f-themselves) combined with the dawn of NIL finally made it the right time to join the SEC. The implosion of the Pac (long time coming) sealed the deal...B1G was never a serious consideration, but would have been the landing spot for both us and OU if the SEC for whatever reason decided to not expand...which would have been a near death sentence.
You think the SEC got screwed for playoff teams this year? Imagine how it would be if the B1G had tOSU, Oregon, Washington, USC, UCLA, Penn State, Michigan, Texas and OU. Keep in mind with such a large conference there is little chance of any of the schools I listed having to play more than 2 of the others in any given year, maybe 3 at the very most, and that would probably be if they meet for the CCG.
If you really think about it, Sankey allowing Texas and OU to go to the B1G would have been a disaster for the SEC. Sure they could push hard for Clemson, FSU, Miami etc. All are fading brands to the national psyche, and none of those programs really bring a huge bump to the SEC from a competitive standpoint and would hurt Florida and SCar for recruiting purposes...as well as other teams who heavily rely on players from those regions. Right now the Cocks and Gators can sell the fact of "you wanna play in the SEC and still be close to home then we got you covered"

No, y’all expected us just to go along with whatever you wanted (PAC) then it came out that A&M was brokering a deal with the SEC and you shite stains got pissed and had Ken Starr file a fricking lawsuit. Fast forward a decade and you idiots are finally realizing what everyone else already knew…that you had destroyed the conference and were going to get left on the sidelines if you didn’t make a move. And what a move it was. Crying that Daddy Aggie was right all along.

Oklahoma was #18 until Texas won
Georgia was #5 until Texas lost

Michigan was 7-5.
OU was 6-6
Vandy was 6-6
A&M was 8-4
These teams aren't ranked now because they don't deserve to be ranked. Just because Texas beat them before people figured out they weren't a top 25 team doesn't make the win good.
FSU was ranked when GT beat them. That doesn't mean anything... FSU is a 2-win team.

All of that stuff except Longhorn Network (Texas 'destroyed' LHN? What?) applies to Texas A&M as well.

Your school is so full of itself it thought an entire nationwide broadcast network devoted only to Texas sports could succeed. Insanity.

Kind of surprising to see which SEC fan bases are starting to act like sniveling ags.
I guess we do ruin everything.

No it can’t.
And the precise reason it can’t be said about the LHN was because your AD came to our AD to have a joint network with A&M and Texas and we said “no thanks” to screwing over our conferencemates.
