2. The Protect College Sports Act Provision (Federal Legislation)

A proposed provision in the federal Protect College Sports Act aims to stop coaches from leaving their teams mid-season.

The Trigger: Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU right before Ole Miss began its run in the College Football Playoffs.

The Penalty: The proposed rule slaps any coach who abandons a program mid-season with a one-year suspension for the following season.

Let’s be real—this entire proposal is a dead-on-arrival Commerce Clause nightmare. Reeks of violations.

Coaching across state lines is textbook interstate commerce. The federal government blacklisting a private employee from working anywhere in the nation for a year just because he changed jobs across state lines is an extreme restraint of trade. You can't just pass a federal law freezing a guy's earning potential because Ole Miss’ AD and fanbase are sorely butthurt.

Coaches already sign employment contracts with buyout clauses and liquidated damages governed by state law. If a coach quits mid-season, his contract dictates the financial penalty (which the new school pays). The feds stepping in to override private contract rights and slap a mandatory federal suspension on top of state-level contracts is a massive overreach into state sovereignty.

Mandating that every single FBS program in America enter into a group boycott and systematically refuse to hire a qualified professional for 365 days is a textbook Section 1 Sherman Act violation. The NCAA gets sued into oblivion every single time they try to restrict player/coach mobility, and a federal statute doing it for the benefit of playoff broadcasters won't stand up in court either.

Universities fire head coaches mid-season without a single federal penalty all the time. But the second a coach exercises his own leverage to take a top-tier job at LSU, politicians want to step in and freeze his career? No other multi-million-dollar industry in the country operates like that.

This proposal is nothing more than salty grandstanding by politicians trying to score cheap points with home-state fanbases. The second it gets signed, any competent federal judge issues an immediate injunction before the ink even dries.

Lane Kiffin didn’t leave mid season. He wanted to coach the Rebs in the playoffs, but their AD wouldn’t let him. He was basically fired.

Lane is 2-1 in the playoffs. LSU paid him for his victories against Tulane and Georgia. Ole Miss is probably embarrassed for letting Pete claim those victories. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think those are Lane’s wins.

LSU paid Lane Kiffin bonuses because of a unique clause in his contract that matches the College Football Playoff (CFP) incentives he would have earned had he stayed at Ole Miss.

Tulane Win: Kiffin earned a $250,000 bonus from LSU after Ole Miss defeated Tulane in the first round.

Georgia/Sugar Bowl Win: He received an additional $500,000 bonus following the Rebels' Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia.

Kirby can’t keep his team out of jail. Cig played a team full of 25 year olds.

Kiffin is way more successful without the same controversy than those two. If you forced Kirby or Cig to play by the rules like Lane does, no trophies.

You said it, not me.

So you’re not a Kiffin fan? Sidewalk, you are part of the problem then. You are either on the Lane train or not.

Are you going to help me correct all the people on here mocking the crap out of Lane? I can’t stand every school laughing at Lane and the media too.
