Obviously we were penny pinching and couldn't afford a buyout, so we had to make Baker the highest paid DC in college football.
Plus, we wouldn't let Kiffin pick his own defensive coordinator because we're broke, so we waited until Kiffin accepted the job and he then told Baker not to accept the Tulane job and stay on as his DC even though he didn't want Baker.

LSU has an issue honoring contracts without legal action forcing them to. The contracts are “promises” to pay, not actual money.
