I watched Lane's presser the same way I watched Sankey's, Kirby's, Pete's, Will Stein's, Beamer's, and Elko's. Did not know watching other coaches speak at SEC media days in the middle of summer when there is very little happening in the sports world qualifies as obsession.

The three seasons after Saban left were LSU’s most successful 3 year period in program history- they went 34-6 and won a national championship. That is even better than Saban’s best 3 year period from 2001 to 2003 where he went 31-9 and won a national championship.
Since 2008, the 4th season post Saban when most of his recruits were gone, LSU’s success has been very uneven. Since 2008 LSU had 4 or more losses in 10 of their 18 seasons. They had 5 or more losses in 5 of 18 seasons. They finished unranked 6 of 18 seasons (2 each for Miles, O, and Kelly). And that is giving them credit for all the vacated wins from the Miles error. The official record book is even uglier for LSU.
Saban didn’t leave a foundation, he left a roster of players. When those players left LSU was back to being LSU. Outside of 2019 - when the stars aligned with Burrow and Brady - LSU has been very pedestrian since 2008.
If Saban left such a great foundation why did LSU revert back to their historic mean of 8-4?
LSU fans love to point and laugh at Alabama going 20-8 (10-4 on average) since Saban left. But then they talk about the foundation Saban left at LSU over 20 years ago. It makes no logical sense.

You had a couple good teams in there. But you had more 5+ loss teams than you did 2011 teams. Even Saban went 8-5 in his third year. Three of his five seasons at LSU he had less than 10 wins: 8-4 in year one, 8-5 in year three, 9-3 in year five.
Some LSU fans seem to believe that a 10 win season is a birthright. But even Nick Saban couldn’t manage it 50% of the time.

I put the actual numbers in this very thread. Nick Saban did show what LSU can be. An inconsistent program with occasional great teams, some pretty good teams, and some very meh teams.

But I think anyone would agree that if Saban had never left LSU he would’ve won 10+ NCs.

That is an 8-4 regular season record. That means you almost certainly had a 4-4 or 5-3 conference record, right there in the middle of the pack, a borderline top 25 team. That is very pedestrian.

Why? In 5 seasons at LSU he won 1.
At that rate he would have needed to coach 45 more years to win 10 national championships. Nick Saban would be 93.
There is no logical or rational reason to believe Nick Saban would have won 10 national championships at LSU.
