“That’s a great question,” Smart said. “I usually wouldn’t normally answer that, but I’m not going to be politically correct and say who I think is the best player, and everyone will know why I think he’s the best player,” Smart said. “Because of what he did to Georgia, DeVonta Smith. This is a young man that I had in camp when he was in the eighth and ninth grade, and I was at Alabama. He weighed like 125. He was so small and he was so talented.

“One time he was actually committed to Georgia, not many people remember that. Decommitted to Georgia, ends up going to Alabama, won the national championship on the last play of the game against us and then played a phenomenal game against us this year.”

Earlier this season, Smith caught 11 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-24 over Smart’s Bulldogs.

“We had two good corners draped all over him. You couldn’t ask them to cover him any better. He comes in and out of breaks better than anyone I’ve seen. He catches the ball when going back to the quarterback. To me, he’s the player in college football.”

Smart’s comments on the Alabama receiver come on the same day Smith was named The Associated Press player of the year.

If he doesn’t win it really is a poor decision

Crazy he was committed to UGA. He would have Been wasted away there. Smart move I guess.

Instead he wants to play for a super team at Bama. Yeah, great on him.

His numbers don’t sniff the Heisman in a normal year, that’s a fact.

This isn’t necessarily wrong. Ja’Marr Chase had better numbers last year and didn’t even finish close to the top of Heisman voting

This I disagree with though. Smith deserves the award. He can only outperform players in this season

Yeah, that would've been cool if he could've padded his stats against Georgia Southern, Northwestern State, Vanderbilt, and Utah State.

He padded his stats against SEC defenses that were ranked lower than ironically all of the FBS teams except the SEC team, vanderbilt, who had the lowest ranked defense of the 3

Imagine leading your team to a 3 loss season

No one at Alabama has done that in 10 years

All I can tell you is Utah State and Georgia southern were both more highly rated on defense than 4 or 5 SEC teams last year. And they were higher rated on offense than a couple I do believe

You seem angry. Like Bama took something from you.

Fournette? Is that you?

Did he?

Jamar Chase after 15 games
84 catches, 1780 yards 20 tds

Devonta Smith after 11 games
98 catches, 1511 yards, 17 tds (plus 25 yards per punt return and a td)

JaMarr actually had other receivers on his team though

You don’t seriously think Smith is putting up anything close to those numbers if any 2 person combination. If Waddle, Jeudy, or Ruggs were there this season do you?

Chase had Jefferson who is better than all of those to contend with plus Marshall
