If you are smart you don't build your team through the portal. You address a handful of needs. Stuck with a craptacular LT? Get the best one out there.
You don't buy a horde of players who all have to settle in. You buy a few players and let them blend into the existing structure. That isn't just CFB, winners in the NFL don't overly rely on the free agent market. Sure, bring in those missing pieces, but if you over do it you've got a band of guys who don't know each other trying to learn to be a team on the fly.
Ain't nothin' good going to come from that unless you just have insane talent.

This. If you don't have 50% blue chip players on your team, historically you don't have any chance to win anything, and you aren't getting to 50% in the portal.

He’s not a top 10 coach. Guy is allegedly an offensive guru but the offense has ruined our season by game 7. We can’t afford to buy him out so hopefully some dumpster fire school poaches him and we can give a competent coach the same level of buy in that Kiffin has got.

Hard to get all the part to play as a whole in under 9 months, especially when these players have access to mounds of cash. Cash will mostly kill focus in the short-run.
