Part of the reason it's so bad at LSU now is because they have neutered traditional tailgating so much with all the incredibly expensive paid parking. Hardly anyone can park in central campus and setup right by their truck.
People used to go back to their tailgates after the game and hang out for a bit until traffic died down. Can't do that anymore because you have to tear it down before the games now and haul everything back to your vehicle a half mile away.
Not sure if this is as big of a problem at other schools, but it's a big issue here. Of course, the traffic being god awful is a huge issue too.

Just think about 43,000 LSU can leave early and there would still be more fans than at the Ole Miss high school stadium
