A lot of kids don't even try to get into UGA anymore.

also want to say this, Bama is a really good school, but they have been pushing policies to boost revenues for a while (out of state recruiting for higher tuitions, radio ads for online classes and degrees, etc)

it is not a "notion"
it's a fact
Auburn has more stringent admission policies and offers less scholarship money for comparable grades than Alabama does
I know this from personal experience and I am entirely unconcerned with whether you accept the truth or not
my son graduated from one of the top 5 public high schools in Alabama with a 4.29 GPA and scored a 32 on the ACT (UGA and Bama both were willing to call it a 33 as a "superscore", Auburn was not)
he was offered a full ride to Bama, but only a 3/4 scholly to Auburn
Auburn has worked hard to improve academically and that work has paid off

Why? Alabama admits more elite students (ACT of 32 or higher) than any other SEC school, save for A&M
link?
it's harder to get into Auburn than it is to get in Alabama
I have posted this fact many times here in the past. Here is how you know I am correct. Look at the 75th percentile of students at UA. It is 31. It was 32 just two years ago. Auburn's is only 28 by the way. Now look at the 75th percentile of ACT scores (great majority of UA applicants submit only ACT) for other schools. Now compare the size of their freshman classes to that of UA. If UA enrolls about a 1000 more freshman than UGA for example, even if UGA has a 75th percentile of 32, UA still enrolls a larger number, though not percentage, of elite students.
Later I will try to make a list of the 75th percentile for each school.

You have to factor in 1. the overall dumbness of the population; and 2. the fact that few people from out of state want to go to a school like Alabama.

I have posted this fact many times here in the past. Here is how you know I am correct
Alabama is a fine school, clearly better than Auburn in several fields (example, law)
but Auburn has higher admission standards at this point in time (I was honestly very surprised to learn this myself as Bama was considered better for so long)
it is what it is
top SEC school for academics is Vandy, and it isn't really even close
2nd is Florida, and again, it really isn't close
3rd? toss-up between UGA and aTm
Auburn has slid into the 5th spot that Bama held for a long time by a hair

The only “good” schools on the sec are Florida, Georgia, Vanderbilt, and maybe a&m
Posted on 11/25/19 at 8:28 pm to Flibs
Sec schools in general are so easy to get into. I got into auburn without even completing my application, and accidentally submitting my lowest sat score as well

You would be wrong about Ole Miss not having an HC. It has a top 15 HC. Average unweighted GPA of 3.97 and 32 ACT for last years admitted class. It is a great program.

Yeah, you’re a fricking idiot. Go back to the Tech board with your shite thoughts. This is an SEC board. Don’t bother replying as I wont waste anymore time on you.

Except for the fact that the great majority of Alabama's students are from out of state. Try to be a little less bigoted about Alabama. Rely on facts next time.

Kentucky may not be as selective in their admissions but they are far from giving away degrees.
Retention rates and existing to be a diploma mill don't correlate.
Kentucky certainly is not a diploma mill- no major, accredited state school is such- but your reasoning here is poor

You know, winning the argument on Point #2 kind of undermined your argument on Point #1....

Below are links to the College Board profiles for Alabama, then Auburn. You can find a profile for every SEC school there. Just put the name of the school in the search window. Then click on "Applying" on left side menu. Then click on ACT or SAT depending on which test the majority of students submit on their application admission. There is a way to approximate what a particular ACT score means relative to an SAT score. But for Alabama's purposes, compare its 75th percentile of ACT to other SEC schools. Then look at the size of Alabama's freshman class each Fall (second only to A&M for years now) and you will see I am right.

I will post a separate thread showing the 25th and 75th percentile of ACT scores for each SEC school, but for example, Alabama's is 23-31. That is a very wide range. UGA's is 27-32.
Alabama's 2018 freshman class was 6,663
UGA's was 5,728
It stands to reason that Alabama has a higher number of students with an ACT of 32 or higher with that many more freshman than UGA. It may not be many more though. And yes, Alabama admits a lot more of the lower tier students.

It’s true that Alabama admits a high number of kids with elite ACT scores. It’s also true that Alabama is throwing financial packages at those kids that dwarf the competition. Not a thing wrong with that, but it is the biggest factor in landing those students.

I don’t have a problem with open admission at all. As a state flagship and public institution, it seems reasonable to improve access to Kentucky citizens. I would be more concerned if the graduation rate was also the highest, implying they aren’t having to earn their degree. That is definitely not the case. Graduation rates are as follows:
Mississippi St 60.4%
Kentucky 60.6%
Ole Miss 61.4%
Arkansas 62.3%
Alabama 65.7%
Tennessee 69.2%
Missouri 69.5%
Auburn 71.1%
South Carolina 73%
Georgia 84.6%
Florida 87.1%
Vanderbilt 92.9%
This is old data. Alabama's six year grad rate is now 72%, which is still not great, but it is better than 65%.

I don't care how Alabama is doing it. The important thing is that it has yielded results. Alabama made a huge mistake years ago in letting Auburn take on the rep of the engineering school. Alabama has the fourth oldest engineering program in the nation. Finally, it has stepped up and is on the way to fulfilling its potential. Its engineering facilities and students match those at almost any state flagship school.
Look, if Auburn had the same ability to fund this level of scholarships, it would. If Auburn had the same beautiful campus as Alabama has, it would also be able to attract elite students.
