His question wasn't that stupid. FWIW the '03 national championship game between LSU and Oklahoma was played on a Sunday night. He was probably thinking about that when he asked you that question.

I work for the railroad and one of our van drivers at work seems to come up with some new dumb shite every day.
He thinks J. Jefferson is gonna be a top ten draft pick. Why? Because he's so fast.
He's also said LSU could beat most NFL teams.

Seriously, regardless of what you thought, he was pulling your chain. He was trying to play like the game didn't matter to him, and he sold it to you apparently perfect.
