Chip Kelly made some very good and gustsy calls that gave Oregon a shot at the end. I think Oregon played a heck of a game and as good a game as could have been expected of them.
+1. I think we played to the very best of our abilities. People can say that Coach Kelly made video game like calls and that he was too gimmicky, however, it had to be done to keep us in the game. It was apparent that without these calls, the game would have gotten out of hand. So, like any good coach would do, he pulled whatever he had out of the play book to keep us in the game. And, it almost worked...almost....

So what are your expectations vs LSU next year considering they are probably faster and bigger? Other than QB, of course.

Underestimate the Ducks at your own peril.

Where in my comments did I underestimate anyone?

That is how it came across. At least to me.

Well said. You will never see an LSU fan be as positive as you after a loss and that is shitty to say. Big props to ya'll this season. That game was very fun to watch. Some of the plays Oregon ran were very creative. Chip called one hell of a game. What is it... 224 more days till LSU vs Oregon in Dallas. See you there?
Oh and congrats to Auburn also. You guys showed why the SEC is stronger than any other. The difference between the SEC and any other conference is that almost all the teams have dominant big men in the interior d-line.

I believe the ruling, in regards to DJ Williams being called down vs Dyer, was that it was his non-ball hand and it was really his palm, with maybe a touch of wrist, while it was the back of Williams wrist with the ball in that hand. It's somewhat of an objective rule, but Dyer really had control of his body with his hand and obviously he was not down anywhere else. The Oregon defender just didn't finish the play and has only himself to blame for that.
The field was re-sodded after the Fiesta Bowl and really didn't have enough time to root. That's why guys were slipping everywhere out there. Very dangerous for ankles, knees, etc. Pretty unnacceptable imo.
I'll give the Oregon D some credit. Those guys played well for the most part and just fought and scratched the whole game. Alioti does some interesting things with different formations and disguising blitzes, etc that probably threw our O off somewhat. They bottled up Cam on the ground for the most part too, which is always pretty tough to do.
Both teams had some miscues, but I did feel like after the first couple drives, we really controlled the game for the most part, but I gotta give credit to Oregon for fighting til the end.

Is LSU's defense bigger? Please correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that they were one of the smaller (if not the smallest) defenses in the SEC. I feel really good considering it is the first game of the year and who knows what can happen then. It also helps that LSU is losing Nevis, Shepherd, and Peterson on defense. It will be extremely difficult to beat LSU for sure, but I do think it will be a very good and close game.

we still have plenty of talent. also losing nevis wont be bad. the freak will make everyone forget mr. im taking games off nevis

LSU has one of the better defenses in the SEC (better than Auburn's at any rate).

of course we have chavis. he is likely to run a fricking soft zone vs oregon and let oregon have chunks of yards

Um, so why should the rule change?
If he's not down - he's not down.
Well he was down. Just was down on top of the defender. It was the right call, but a semi ridiculous rule that defies common sense as seen on the field. However it could have easily been avoided by playing to the whistle. I don't think the rule should be changed, but Oregon shouldn't have stopped playing until the whistle blew. It's on the defense more then it is any official's call.

Most people would say LSU's defense was better than Auburn's - but IMO Fairly was better (and dirtier) than anyone on LSU this year
I expect a highly competitive game between the Ducks and Tigers and am worried the Ducks could pull out a win to torpedo our early season and perhaps BCS hopes

JMO - it will be a very different game between Oregon/LSU compared to Auburn/Oregon
First off it won't be a NC game so there will be fewer commercial time stops - stops which helped Auburn slow the Ducks
Secondly, IMO Auburn was able to control the game on offense by running and keeping possessions going. LSU on offense this year was inconsistent and sometimes just bad on offense... while our running game was generally good our passing game was just sub-par for the year
So we'll see two different teams play under different circumstances next year... I'm just hoping LSU has a serious offseason of improvement... because we needed it on both offense and defense to really be a SEC winner or NC contender

Thanks for the "hats off." I didn't make it to the game, but my folks were there. They said the Oregon fans they met were great.
I agree with much of what you said, but I thought Chip should have abandoned the inside run attempts. He obviously found our week secondary and our strong D line, I would have continued to attack Thorpe (like every other team) and stopped with the inside run. It seemed like he was incredulous that he could run inside, so he kept testing it. Wasted plays when our secondary was exposed.
Good luck next year.

"First off it won't be a NC game so there will be fewer commercial time stops - stops which helped Auburn slow the Ducks."
That's absolutely right. I watched the same thing in last year's Rose Bowl. Oregon's offense depends on rythm and speed like no other offense I've ever watched. If they aren't in an accelerating rythm, their offense is no different than any other run oriented read option. Case in point, Auburn runs a shotgun read option offense - theirs worked better than Oregon's because they've run it slower over the course of their season. And they have the talent to do it at that pace.
Oregon's zone blocking schemes worked throughout the year (other than Cal) because the other team's d-line got tired and Oregon's O-line could out maneuver and leverage them. Last night they never beat Auburn to the spot. They were almost equal in weight and had no agility advantage.
Unless Oregon gets some bruiser offensive linemen and does drive blocking better, they won't win a BCS game with all the momentum breakers in the form of TV timeouts. The end of the first quarter with Oregon at the goal line killed the chance (slim though it was) of getting rolling. Also, Kelly taking the ball to start the game was a mistake - understand his thinking but they should have let Auburn have the pressure of scoring first. That being said, it did come down to who had the ball last.
My prediction - Oregon will beat LSU next year and then lose at least one PAC 12 game. They will not be back in the BCS title game for 10 years (or five if the PAC 12 goes to an 8 game conference schedule instead of 9 games.)

This is very true. There were excessive TV timeouts (rightfully so) compared to our regular season games. I'm not so sure it would have helped considering the Auburn defensive line was just pounding us from the get go, but we thrive on running teams ragged.

I'm not sure about that. We did come close. However, close doesn't count. I do think we could definitely beat a FSU, Texas, OU, etc. type team if we played them in the Nat'l Champ. The Alabama, UF, LSU, Auburn, etc...ehh...we definitely need to bulk up for sure and be able to develop some sort of physical/power running game (even if it is for goal line situations only).

I have no clue if we will beat LSU or not. They looked awfully good against Texas A&M and Alabama this season. Then again, they didn't against Tennessee and Ole Miss. It depends who shows up. I think moving the ball on their defense will be no different than Auburn's....meaning it will extremely difficult for us (especially losing 3 on the offensive line). Being the first game of the season, both teams will have kinks to work out. I'm just hoping we may have a few tricks up our sleeves and can catch LSU off balance.
Our schedule next year consists of:
-LSU (Dallas)
-Nevada
-Missouri State
-@ Arizona
-Cal
-Arizona State
-@ Colorado
-Washington State
-@ Washington
-@ Stanford
-Southern Cal
-Oregon State
-PAC 10 Championship
LSU and Stanford "should" be our only road blocks to another National Championship in my honest opinion.

I'm definitely planning on it. To be honest with you, it is kinda bittersweet for me. I really want to check out this stadium, however, I would much rather get the full Tiger Stadium/Death Valley experience 9/10 times. I've been talking with my brother about ponying up one year and taking a trip to Baton Rouge when you guys play Alabama, Auburn, Florida, etc. considering we aren't fortunate enough to have a LSU-Oregon home and home series. I really want to make it to a game down there. Some family friends down the street (Oregon State grads) went down there around 5-6 years ago and said it was unparalleled.
