Nevertheless, why is the NCAA still out to get Alabama?
That is not the case here at all. To this point, the NCAA's role in this investigation has been only as an advisor to determine Alabama's proper course of action. The fact that a UA compliance official has spoken to a NCAA representative about this very topic -- as The Tuscaloosa News reported Sunday -- should actually bolster fans' confidence that no violation is there, since UA self-imposed no penalties after exploring all avenues to make sure that conclusion would be well-received. This type of investigation is more common at major programs than most would realize. Compliance officials look into everything. It's just that most in-house investigations and subsequent consultations with the SEC/NCAA don't become public like this one has.

Well that's interesting. NCAA is just acting as an advisor to make sure Alabama has seen everything through and to make sure no penalty has taken place.

Just losing that nutcase Andre Smith seemed to put Alabama in a funk for Utah.

offensive schemes are built around the lines of course. we didn't have a fully fleshed out scheme w/o Andre playing. this year with all the time we've had to adjust and train it shouldn't be NEARLY as obvious as it was in the Utah game.

but those are definitely two majorly key players. i'm just grateful we're deep at RB.

I'm sure the SEC wants this handled with speed, but I don't know if it really has anything to do with the players being Julio Jones and Mark Ingram. I can guarantee you ESPN/ABC want Jones and Ingram to play.

It's the first game of the season. I doubt it will really affect ratings for ESPN and ABC, considering the only other good game on at the time is Oklahoma and BYU.

Either you are a college football fan or you aren't - it's not as if this game is in the middle of October when the appetite for football has been satiated.

IMO,Virginia Tech would win in that case comfortably.

I disagree. Word is Upchurch is pushing Ingram for starting job already this summer and I think Saban will not do a lot of passing even if Jones is playing in this game. Just will not put the pressure on GMac in game one,IMO

I see little coming out of this maybe pay back what the trip was "worth". At most sit out one game and that will be about it. Unless Bama has another investigation launched I wouldn't worry about it.

You are speaking from your perspective as an avid college football fan. I'm talking about regular Joe Schmo across the country that wants to see a super star. Would you watch the Patriots play without Brady? It just doesn't have the same draw. Everyone wants to see a superstar play and make no mistake. Julio is a superstar.

The University has all the facts, and if we've seen everything they've seen then I'd play them regardless. Two guys go on a fishing trip with a guy not associated with the University. Big whoop. What's next, locking them up in the off-season?

I've stated my opinion that I believe it isn't big enough to warrent much of anything. With that said there is a lot of BS in the statements by the guy. he didn't know they were players for Bama and somehow befriended them when they have nothing in common. There are a lot of other irregularities in his statements. With that said I still don't see much of this at most a game suspension and pay back what the trip was worth.

I think that is about stupid for the NCAA to not let them know before hand.

But to answer your question, they cant play them if there is a chance it could be a violation.

I agree with this. You just can't take the chance no matter how small you think it is.

U bammers are something else. Last year u lost an OLINEMAN and got skull fricked by Utah. Now you're saying you would beat VT even if you lost your two best offensive weapons??

I hear 'ya tuck, but the reality is that folks that are casual fans outside of the southeast couldn't tell you who Julio Jones actually plays for. A casual viewer in Boston or San Francisco probably knows Tebow, Bradford, and McCoy, and so the combined ratings between the two telecasts would be roughly the same from a $$ perspective

You MIGHT lose ~250k viewers, but at today's airtime prices that translates to $90,000. shite, Kirk Herbstreit will spend more than that on his hair that weekend.

Edited because my math sucks, it's really $90k not $70k. Kirk Herbstreit still will spend more on his hair that weekend.

You realize we had a 3rd string LT after the first series playing, right? Attibuting that loss solely because of losing Smith is silly. Our D, didn't play up to snuff either that first quarter. Utah was the better team that night, plain and simple.

Also, Va Tech has lost alot this preseason too. To think they would win easily if we didn't have Julio/Ingram is a little absurd too. They had the 111 ranked passing attack last year and they've lost their #1 running threat. Their QB's TD/Int level is something like 3 to 1 in favor of INTs.
