Fully agree with you. And I think it’s gotten worse with journalists going on Twitter and much like Kiffin did acting like 16-year-old girls. I despise Twitter, which I once heard described as 3 million infants shaking their rattles.

I don't doubt this. At the presser Lane sure seemed interested in who Jon's sources were. I wonder if Jon will tell him privately?

Either way, I wonder if Jon's report ended up killing the deal between AU and Kiffin. If Kiffin thinks someone at AU leaked this, he would probably be pretty pissed.

I don’t know. I’ve said I figured the source was either Cohen, or someone very close to him, and that Kiffin got pissed because he lost control of the situation.

I think Kiffin’s big problem is he is emotionally a teenager and I could absolutely see him staying in Oxford just to spite Sokoloff. But him and Sexton have screwed the extension gambit with Ole Miss. If there was any justice he’d take a pay cut. I looked at his contract last night and it’s got a jillion potential bonuses but I see few if any he’ll get for his team’s performance.

I have worked as an editor as well as a writer. I can’t speak for anyone else, but if one of my people quoted an anonymous source, I had to know who it was before we used it. And it’s something that I rarely if ever permitted, only when absolutely necessary. But you’d be stunned at the kind of people who like to talk to us if not as a primary source but on background. Keeping one’s mouth shut isn’t human nature.

Did you edit tweets?

This answers my question (I didn't see it before posting).

I stand by my original comment.
Jon should out his source if the information is fake news. Or quit.
Twitter is the vessel that should correct bad journalism.

That’s a famous line from an old political show called “The McLaughlin Group” that political junkies and old farts like me will probably remember, it means as certain as it’s possible to be.
MCLaughlin Group during the 1988 election cycle was must-see TV.

When those kettle drums at the beginning of the open hit and you could see McLaughlin, Jack Germond, Michael Kinsley, Morton Kondracke and Robert “Prince of Darkness” Novak on the set, you knew you were in for a wild 26 minute ride

If Cohen himself is leaking this stuff before the Egg Bowl, Lane should immediately back out of any potential agreement in place. That is not someone you want to work for or with.

Those were GIANTS of journalism, my heroes, even the ones I disagreed with personally. I’ll absolutely stand up and say that there aren’t any people of their level in the trade … and journalism is a trade, not a profession, it’s pretentious to call it a profession … these days.

Don’t disagree with you one iota but the other factor here is AU is looking to make a big splash and proclaim their relevance with this hire

I concur 100%.

I don’t know your political persuasion at all, but I have a feeling we’d get along great

It wasn't. That was leaked from the Ole Miss side.

Fact. Ole Miss reporters were suggesting it long before that guy made his tweet.

Remember when Kiffin was asked, and his reply was something about a leak in their roof?

People were like, WTH is talking about. The leak was from Ole Miss trying to make Lane SIGN the extension and he still hasn't.

Why?

I mean, maybe. Maybe not. Nobody really knows right now. If they did then this wouldn’t be the source of endless conjecture.

I don’t discuss politics online … I look at the Politics Board here but no way I’m diving into that mess … I’ll just say I can’t be pigeonholed and leave it at that.

I think someone with Ole Miss AD or booster knew pretty sure it was going down and used Sokolff as their bitch to blow it up and it worked.

Also, I can believe his kids could have played a factor like it was talked about.

Cohen didn't leak shite.

OK let me come at it this way … and I’ll say up front I don’t know Sokoloff from Adam’s house cat, have no clue about his background and skills and track record.

He burns this source, nobody will ever talk to him again.

But what if he comes across some information that YOU would like to know, but he can’t verify or confirm it because he’s now reviled as the guy who burns his sources?

And don’t play the “we can just wait until the official announcement” card because that denies human nature too, and if people were willing to just wait for the official announcement on things places like this wouldn’t exist LOL.

You actually could be 100% right. The fact is none of us, including me, know jack caca, with or without metaphysical certitude, about what’s going on here. We’re just anonymous voices babbling our .02 which probably ain’t worth .02 on a message board and, hopefully, having some fun with it.

And I'll counter...
He doesn't burn the source. Why should we care what he writes ever again?

A bad journalist hurts the profession.
"What ifs" don't change that.
Let the good journalists (or young journalists) learn from his costly mistake and carry the flag moving forward.

I don't know what this means.
Not sure I care.
Bad journalism is bad. For everyone (consumers, other journalists, and the subject of the content).

Edit to add: the lesson may be for the bad sources. Be bad, look bad publicly. There is too much shite being flung at the walls of twitter.
