It’s actually a cost cutting move at this point.
How much you think a top 7 college HC would cost annually right now in 2020? How bout in 2021? I assure you it’s over $7.5. And nearly all their contracts are guaranteed. Can you even name a CFB HC whose contract salary isn’t guaranteed?

In all honesty a 6-0 start should only get y’all around a #15 ranking.

If Jimbo does not win 10 games this year I don't think he ever will at A&M. The first six games could not be better set up for him. The two SEC teams he plays are both breaking in new coaches and weren't able to install their systems over the Spring like normal.
Colorado is better than they have been but guess what? They are also breaking in a new Head Coach who didn't get spring ball to install his systems. North Texas spanked Arkansas two years ago but fell off the face of the Earth last season. Fresno State? If they do get to play football they are... you guessed it... breaking in a new HC and they might not even get a summer camp for football.
You could not ask for an easier start to the season. 4 of the first 6 games are against new coaching staffs who will probably still be trying to install their offense and defense. The only excuse for A&M not to start off 6-0 is if some of those schools have to cancel their football season.
