He's done that to a few defenses this year.

If Guice started this year everyone knows he would have gotten it. He got first team all SEC and second team all SEC as a backup lol.

No. Allen and Kelly are both better than Hurts. No question. Reality of it is that the kid had 8 games that he threw for around 150 yards, plus or minus 20. Advantages of playing on a better team I guess.

Hurst winning this is just proof how far the SEC has fallen when it comes to offense.

Here's the thing. He isn't particularly better than Blake Sims. I think it is fair for people to think things like this are based too much on wins and not enough on individual performance. Hurts did what Bama needed him to do. There also aren't that many particularly stunning offensive performers this year, especially with injuries. Hurd and Kamara missed games, Ralph Webb was hurt, Chad kelly got hurt, Allen got tenderized. I can see why he got it but I also don't think he was the best offensive player.

No hate. Most of his stats are from extended hand offs with all the yards coming after the reception. I don't see the hype at all. I'd take both ole miss QBs, miss st QB and a healthy White over him personally.

Guice is probably a better choice.

1,250 rushing yards.. #2 in Rushing yards/game (113 yds/game, 14.27 att/game, 7.96 ypc) but averages 6 carries per game less than the #1 guy (Pettway 124 yds/game, 20.5 att/game, 6.07 ypc).

#8 in SEC history in rushing yards per attempt in a single season. In 92 more carries he'll be eligible for the career rushing yards per attempt.. unlikely he will maintain his current 8.1 ypc but 7.66 would put him at #1. He could average 4.5 ypc on his next 92 carries and be #2 all-time in SEC rushing ypc.

Hurts is #72 in yards/game passing.. and behind 42 other QBs in total yards. He's 6th in the SEC (QBs) in total yards as well.

Hey, an Alabama player must mean a down year in the SEC.

By the way, did you guys realize the SEC was down this year?

I'd be interested to know how many of those yards took place after he completed a pass behind the line of scrimmage.

It's not like he picks apart defenses.

There is no doubt they have the training wheels on him a bit in the passing game. They've clearly been able to get away with a steady diet of low risk, high percentage throws and running the ball and I don't blame them for sticking with this plan until someone stops it.

I agree Hurts isn't one of the stronger offensive player of the year winners in SEC history but for THIS year I can't really say he doesn't deserve it. They have to give it someone and his overall production numbers are as good as any and he's led his team to an undefeated season and a conference championship. Who else are you going to give it to?

What is great is that he is a true freshman and it's more likely than not he becomes a more polished passer as he learns to read defenses and make better/quicker decisions. Can't wait to see him defend his Offensive Player of the Year award in future years.

Hurts is an 18 yr old, green horn QB starting for the reigning conference and national champs. I think he did ok.

Where is the negativity?
Cmon, man. Just look in this thread. Jalen Hurts had a better season as a true freshman than Nick Marshall ever had. More yards and TDs than AJ McCarron ever had in a season.

I just hope he's able to handle all the hype.

Don't know if he deserved the award, but when your team stands out with an undefeated season this happens.

As far as handling the hype, I don't think I can remember a freshman in his position look so damn cool and unaffected by everything going on around him. Whether he made major mistakes or major plays he looked the same.

I have a good idea this young man will prepare and perform the same way. Pretty impressive young man and I hate you Bama...

He's a cool cat for such a young kid.

In his first interview Saturday night, the reporter asked him why he doesn't let his mistakes effect him. He just shrugged and said, "well nobody's perfect."

I cant recall the other games, but I'm pretty sure he threw 90% of his passes behind the line of scrimmage against Auburn

....and they gained about 15+ yards every time
