(This is long so only for the interested)
I am fascinated by this family. This kid AND his family are Mississippi, Alabama and national athletics royalty. They collectively have played for Ole Miss, MSU, Southern Miss and Alabama at the college level and have had long successful professional carreers also. They have not just played for these teams but have been historically relevant for these teams. I think their family story is worthy of a book to be written about them. It truly is remarkable.
If you simply google these names, it is rediculous:
Jake Mangum: MSU One of if not the most electric players in all of college baseball. Legendary status achieved.
Kris Mangum Jake's Uncle:
NFC champion (2003) Carolina
2× first-team All-SEC (1995, 1996) Ole Miss
NCAA Division I-A national champion (1992) Alabama
John Wayne Mangum Jr.
Played in 9 NFL seasons from 1990-1998 for the Chicago Bears.
He played collegiately at Alabama and holds the season (24) and career record for passes broken up (47).
His grandfather, John "Big John" Mangum Sr., played college football at Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi before playing for the Boston Patriots of the American Football League.
Their story is intriguing because there are many transfers from one school to another, the family has ties to many rival schools in a close geographical footprint, they have had historical roles as players for these schools on historical teams, they have all had significant pro careers except for Jake (who will no doubt also have pro success), and they are here to interview. Someone needs to write their story not just in an article but in a book.

Interesting, didn’t know that.
Weird how all of his relatives were football players and he’s so little.

Pretty sure there was a Mangum football player at Ole Miss in the 50’s. Not sure if he’s related to the others.

Plus if their football careers didn't go as well as they planned, they had the makings of a promising family-operated private-investigation empire, waiting in the wings.....

John Mangum Jr was a smart, instinctive db for Bama back in the day. He brought intensity & gave maximum effort every game he played which is why he played so many years in the NFL. One of my favorites.

His dad played DB at 5'10 and 192 lbs. They are definitely the thin branch of the family tree though.

Good point! House of cards.

I knew about the Mangum family tree. It’s been impressive. Jake actually was headed to Alabama until it came out we were building a kick arse new ball park. At the time he was a bama guy. Our timing was perfect because I think he might have chosen Alabama. For what it’s worth, Jake was born not too far from where I live. 15 miles max.

He is a force. When he comes up to bat I expect him to win the AB. You can see it in how he stares down the pitch. A pitcher's worst nightmare. His fielding is great as well.

There are only two Ole Miss fans on this board who hate Jake but I think it has more to do with his success vs Ole Miss.
Every post game interview whether vs OM or anyone else, he has complimented the other team. He did so tonight after losing to Vandy and gave Rocker all the credit and you know that was hard. He wants a title so bad which is why he came back.
Jake is a good kid, he never brags or self-promotes himself. In fact, he is often times seen alone in the dugout during the season. He is a competitor and even when he grounds a ball that looks like a sure out he runs full speed and never quits.
Thank you for the kind words because he deserves them. He’s gonna be missed after this season.

Interesting how you make any success with one of our players about your university.

Downvoted because you didn’t include pics of Jakes mom

Kris and his sister coached little league when he was in high school. John would come back and watch us. When Alabama played Miami in the sugar bowl, everyone in Magee rooted for him. I hope Jake does great with the Mets.
