I'd live a 64 team D1 football playoff system. That would be awesome.

I look forward to the outrage when 7-5 Southern Miss bubbles out and we have to hear why they deserved the final spot instead of 7-5 Fresno State.

8 or 9 game season with just conference games and then a 64 team playoff

I'm okay with it if they make the esrly rounds a shortened game, say 20 minutes, or maybe just overtime rules. Gives everyone a chance and they can schedule the games just like basketball.

The only way that could work is if you reduce the regular season schedule from 12 games to 10 games. Your regular season would either consist of either eight or nine conference games. Then you have a conference championship for seeding purposes.
A team that makes it all the way to the national title game will have either played 17 or 18 games. That's a lot to ask for in the game of college football.

Season would have to be 9 months long for this to happen

Frickin Gumps...that would take a whole month and a half to get through the tourney. Its not like basketball when you can play your next game 2 days later.

You need better friends.

But, seriously, even a 16-team playoff is doable. Apparently, the Div I-AA / FCS level has been doing it forever. I love watching the semis and final.

Have the 68 team play off. And let the winner play Bama for the National Championship.
Simple when you think about it.

We already have one, it starts in late August-early September. But realistically there are only about 6-10 contenders, no cinderellas

That would mean teams like Auburn and Tennessee would have made the playoffs last season, so it’s a no. I could see 8 teams max, after that you get to garbage.

Should be 12. Bowl games and out of conference scheduling should go to creating automatic bids/byes for conferences.
It saves the bowl system, places emphasis on quality scheduling, gives every conference a chance, protects sovereignty of conference scheduling, expands the number of relevant programs, expands the number of relevant games, and you don’t have to ever go further than 12 because it can encompass/eliminate teams/conferences as a matter of design not based on the total number of teams within the bracket.

Well, more like Alabama vs Clemson is one half of the bracket, the other 66 teams the other half.
