We also have the best football team in history….& the best “unclaimed” Football team in history (1908).
The 1939 Vols are the last team in history to shut out every regular season opponent.
That is one of Robert Neyland’s undefeated regular season teams to not be recognized as national champions by any service despite 1938 and 1940 earning that recognition.
A team that didn’t get scored on all season, has the claim of the best team of all time. Or at least the best defense of all time.

Ah yes, nevermind the fact the AP poll would determine the national champion before bowl games and how AP voters a century ago thought Southern college football was a joke compared to Northern schools.
Thinking AP titles is the only poll that has ultimately mattered throughout the history of the sport the last 100-125 years of the sport existing is peak, modern revisionist history of the sport. It's almost like the first 50 years of college football, the NE United States based AP voters discriminated against Southern football programs. It took the likes of Neyland's Tennessee program and Alabama sustaining decades greatness in the early years of college football in order for Southern college football to finally garner a respectable a national reputation from media members covering and voting on the sport.
But yea, teams like the 1938 Tennessee team that didn't allow a SINGLE frickING POINT (the last team in college football history to be able to claim a scoreless season against them) to be scored on them the entire regular season who were deemed the national champs by every other major poll except the AP *DEFINITELY* are not legit natties, right? We have six natties. Is what it is.

Ummm....no.

Agreed. Possibly best defense. I’d be interested to see their offensive stats.

And their bowl game? Didn't they get beat 14-0?

List of schools that did not allow a score and the games played:
1888 Yale 13 games
1891 Yale 13 games
1892 Yale 13 games
1901 Michigan 10 Games
1909 Yale 10 games
1919 Texas A&M 10 games
1939 Tennessee 10 games
Why would Tennessee get those honors over the other teams listed?

No. 6 other teams have played as many (or more) games than 1939 Tennessee and gone undefeated and unscored on.
It is impossible to tell which team historically was best or had the best defense. Especially when you consider that 1939 team played in a bowl game and got beaten 14-0. Notice he was careful to always say regular season. There was a reason for that.
(1901 Michigan actually played in a bowl game making 11 games played and won that game 49-0) Based upon VolNavy09's reasoning Michigan would get the nod over Tennessee.

No, if you research the other 4, at least 2 more are legitimate claims. Look it up yourself and be the judge.

The AP naming the champion before the bowl games seems to have helped Tennessee in 3 of your claimed title years, as Tennessee lost their bowl games in:
1940
1951
1967
If you are going to complain about that, then how can you claim those years as title years?
Has a champions ever lost their last game and finished #1?
quote:I do tend to agree with you here. There were other services that named champions, but I would think a majority of those services that were recognized should have named your program the champion.

In 1940, only Dunkel named Tennessee the champion. Only one recognized Tennessee as champion, yet you claim it.
Can every school claim a title if they were named champion by one selector?
