Another thought is it's a new "decade", so perhaps people liked the idea of getting gear with the first national championship in the 2020's as opposed to the teens? Could be any number of reasons, and in all likelihood, a combination of many. Enthusiasm certainly matters, but not the only factor obviously.

One of my favorite things to buy is the pennents to hang on the wall. I wish I could find a 1958 one.
