Is This the Most Wide Open the SEC Has Been Since Saban Took Over Bama?

I don't think there is a clear top dog in the SEC and could see UGA, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU, and Arkansas winning with a handful of dark horses. Think this will be a wild SEC season.

Is it really that wide open? Or is someone just overly optimistic?

I don't think I am. I mean UGA and Bama are overhauling their teams. Ole Miss, LSU, and Arkansas return upper SEC tier QBs and experience across the team. To say Bama or UGA has it locked up seems overly optimistic IMO

UGA is not overhauling anything. If anything the offense has more weapons this year. The defense was young last year; we lost a couple of the front 7 on defensive but return 75% of the defensive snaps. In comparison we returned 48% of the d snaps from 21-22. The only thing, is can the QBs lead? That is my only concern. This year is Kirby’s most complete team.

Does that mean the dawgs will 3peat; NO. In all honesty though, if UGA plays their game ; it doesn’t matter what their opponent does.

You named all West teams and UGA. I think you mean this is the most wide open the West has been in a minute. With Bama “struggling”, anyone can take it.

I'd give UGA the benefit of the doubt as top dog until proven otherwise.

Yeah. UGA could play 2023 with a point guard at QB and roll through the regular season. Get the ball in the playmaker's hands. Protect the ball.

There are question marks. But that is the beauty of college football. Every team (top to bottom) has question marks.

Realistically, Bama and Georgia are still the favorites. LSU & TN are certainly on the rise.
And then are a group of good teams that are capable of beating or losing to most anyone on a given Saturday…OM, Arky, A&M, State, KY, USC. FL and Auburn will be improved but I think they may be a year away. And then you have Vandy and MZ who are no longer push overs.

Wide open may not be exactly the description I would use but the separation from the top two to the next ten teams is narrower than it has been for a while. Don’t see too many cakewalk games for teams but I predict there will be a lot of tough games that will be decided in the 4th quarter.

It really isn't that wide open. There are maybe four teams that can win the SEC this year: Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M.

Other than UGA having the best team and easiest schedule, it's a toss up. I think what the OP meant was that after the clearly elite teams, the rest of the SEC could be very fun and interesting, which I totally agree with. I'm not banking on the 60+ year trend of only the elite of a group of 6 teams being in contention changing though.

Bad QB play can doom an otherwise really good team and right now, that is a question mark for UGA.

They had a losing season last year. They just can't seem to put the pieces together.

I think you make some good points, although I disagree over your claims that the SEC lacks a clear top dog. Right now, that's Georgia. Historically, it's still Alabama and the Tide isn't dead yet. Far from it. This could indeed be a wild season from top to bottom. If there's going to be a shakeup of any kind, this might be the year.
