Missouri Tigers: the name comes from a unit of Union Home Guards called the Fighting Tigers of Columbia, formed in 1864 to protect CoMo from Confederate guerrillas.

I appreciate your loyalty to The Ole War Skule, but the funding for LSU wasn't approved by the Louisiana state legislature until 1859. In 1860, William T. Sherman founded the Louisiana Military Seminary in Pineville, LA. It would later become Louisiana State University and relocate to Baton Rouge.
