Just like with youth football, if you have the best players in your area on one team, that team should and more than likely will dominate. Making the coach in the eyes of many, a great coach. Saban has some of the best talent in the country and he should be successful. However, you must give him credit for continuing to develop and educate those players in his brand of football. Is he the greatest coach ever, IMO NO. He is a great recruiter and tactician. Put him on a SC or Mizz (no disrespect intended) team, he would not have that type of success without the same level of players, truth be told no coach would.

People seem to forget about his coordinator turnover whenever they talk about this subject. His best OC and DC ever are both at new schools right now (Georgia and FAU) and he deals with that almost every year.

Nick doesn’t bring in a Brent Venables or a Lane Kiffin every time he hires a new coordinator. Sometimes they’re basically the college equivalent of Freddie Kitchens at their spot. With that being said, there are gonna be lapses in all the talent’s ability to get used to coverages and concepts every year. However, I am starting to question Scott Cochran. Feels like every year we have an injury to a key player that bites us later in the season and I’m thinking him and a few other people in the training staff need to be given the boot.

No point trying to converse you. Like nearly all LSU fans you will disappear in a week and a day.

What is this obsession with ''alters'' about ? paranoia and insecurity seem likely.

Those are good records for NFL teams, and outstanding for Miami.

However Coach Saban did leave Miami for a better job, just like he left LSU for a better job.

I mean, I get the general argument, but his programs both recruit at a high level and develop at a high level. He's an elite evaluator. He and his staff is elite at development. So, I guess it depends if development is considering coaching or not? I think it is, but most of the time these discussions seemed geared around in-game coaching.

I like where you went here. Les Miles lived off of talent alone without the ability to develop or hire properly to develop the talent LSU was able to attract.

Saban has never impressed me with his game day generalship, but he is an amazing day to day administrator, talent evaluator/developer and motivator.

With the current college landscape in mind, he is hands down the best the college game has ever seen. Having said that, Dabo Swinney ain't far behind.

Sure, if it makes you feel better saying an average coach has completely dominated your teams, the SEC, and most of college football for more than a decade, knock yourself out.

I think the same about the "overrated" chant. Fans who chant that are selling their own team's win short.

He is good but has also taken advantage of TN, FLA, and LSU not being very strong for a long time.

Bear Bryant didn't win any national titles at Maryland, Kentucky, or Texas A&M. Was he just an above average coach with superior talent?

I do believe he is just an above average coach without superior talent.

So is everyone else.

How many schools have won a national championship in the last 20 years without raking in at least one Top 10 recruiting class? I'll give you the answer: zero.

Recruiting is THE most important factor in college football when it comes to winning national championships. Anyone who argues different is ignorant or a troll.

Also, dan, this was a good thread. It's not trolling or flaming and it's just asking a question and stoking a discussion.

OP was trying to have a serious conversation, he wasn't in to getting defensive or pissy. OP has no fricking idea what a consistently great college coach is made up of because he's had to settle with one of the most stubborn HC's in this conference for the last 7 yrs with Gus. He has watched Gus bring in talented players, and average top 10 ranks for the best recruiting AU has ever experienced. But he's also had to watch Gus consistently exhibit piss poor roster management, stick with scheme that is no longer effective, refuse to tailor his offensive scheme to his personnel, and every single season make some of the most bone headed play calls in existence. He's actively watching Gus piss away on of the best defenses in the country right now.

Thank you, and spot on in both posts.
